Nisab to use

Hanafi scholars use the silver nisab when your wealth is a mix of gold, cash and other assets. If you only own gold, the gold nisab applies.

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, payable once you have held wealth at or above nisab for a full lunar year. On Rs 100,000 that is Rs 2,500, provided your total wealth is above nisab.

Enter what you own and what you owe above. The gold and silver prices are pre-filled with the rates of 28 September 2026; change them to today's rate from your local jeweller for an exact figure.

What counts for zakat

Include these at their value on the day your zakat year completes:

  • Cash at home and in your wallet.
  • Bank balances, current and savings accounts alike.
  • Gold and silver in any form: bars, coins and jewellery.
  • Business stock held for sale, at its market value.
  • Money owed to you that you expect to recover.
  • Shares, funds and savings certificates held as savings or for trade.

These are not zakatable: the house you live in, your car, household goods, clothes, and fixed assets of a business such as machinery or a shop building. Gemstones are not zakatable unless you trade in them.

Gold jewellery in the Hanafi school

Most families in Pakistan follow the Hanafi school. In Hanafi fiqh, zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery even if it is worn, once nisab and a full year are met. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools mostly exempt jewellery kept for normal personal use.

Some websites say women's jewellery is exempt without naming the school. That is not the Hanafi position. If you follow another school, ask a scholar of that school.

Jewellery is usually 22 or 21 karat. Pick the purity in the calculator and it values the gold at that share of the 24 karat rate. Do not add the value of any stones. To convert grams to tola, use the gram to tola converter.

Debts and which nisab to use

Deduct debts that are due now, such as a loan instalment that has fallen due, unpaid bills, or money you have promised to repay soon. Long-term debts such as a home loan are treated differently by different scholars, so ask a scholar how much of yours to deduct.

For nisab, Hanafi scholars use silver (52.5 tola) when your wealth is a mix of gold, cash and other assets. This gives a lower threshold, so more people pay. If you own only gold and nothing else zakatable, the gold nisab of 7.5 tola applies, and the calculator checks your gold weight against 7.5 tola automatically. The current rupee values of both are on the zakat nisab page.

Worked example

This is the example already loaded in the calculator, at the 28 September 2026 rates (24k gold Rs 438,136 per tola, silver Rs 6,578 per tola).

Item Value
2 tola gold jewellery, 22 karat: 2 x 438,136 x 22/24 Rs 803,249
Cash in hand Rs 150,000
Bank balances Rs 250,000
Less debts due now minus Rs 50,000
Net zakatable wealth Rs 1,153,249

The wealth is a mix of gold and cash, so the silver nisab applies: 52.5 x Rs 6,578 = Rs 345,345. Net wealth is above that, so zakat is due.

Zakat: 2.5% of Rs 1,153,249 = Rs 28,831.

Zakat deducted by your bank

Under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980, banks deduct zakat at 2.5% on 1 Ramadan from savings accounts, PLS accounts, fixed deposits, savings certificates and similar holdings. The deduction applies only when the balance on that day is at or above the bank nisab notified for the year. For Ramadan 2026 it was Rs 503,529. Current accounts are not subject to this deduction.

If you would rather pay zakat yourself, or your fiqh does not require zakat on these assets, you can submit a CZ-50 declaration to your bank. It is a sworn statement on stamp paper that you are Muslim, naming your fiqh, and that under it you are not obliged to pay zakat on those assets. It is sworn before an oath commissioner or notary with two witnesses, and banks commonly ask for it at least 30 days before 1 Ramadan. Non-Muslims do not need CZ-50.

If the bank did deduct zakat, keep the amount on record when you work out what you still owe.

This calculator follows common Hanafi practice and is a guide only. Your circumstances, such as long-term debts, business assets or a different fiqh, can change the answer. Ask a qualified scholar if you are unsure. Gold and silver rates move daily.

Zakat questions

How much zakat is due on 1 lakh rupees?

Rs 2,500, which is 2.5% of Rs 100,000. This applies only if your total zakatable wealth, including gold, cash and savings, is at or above nisab and has been held for a lunar year. At the 28 September 2026 silver rate, the silver nisab was Rs 345,345, so Rs 100,000 alone would not be enough.

How much zakat on 1 tola of gold?

At the 28 September 2026 rate of Rs 438,136 per tola for 24 karat gold, zakat on 1 tola is about Rs 10,953. For 22 karat it is about Rs 10,041. Zakat is only due if your total wealth reaches nisab, so check that first with the calculator.

What is the zakat percentage?

2.5% of net zakatable wealth, which is one fortieth. It is charged on the total value of your zakatable assets after deducting debts that are due, not on your income. The rate is the same for cash, gold, silver and business stock.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Hanafi scholars say to use the silver nisab when you own a mix of assets, such as gold plus cash. If all your zakatable wealth is gold, use the gold nisab. The silver nisab is much lower, so it brings more people into paying zakat, which benefits the poor.

Is zakat due on my house or car?

No. The home you live in, your personal car, furniture and household items are not zakatable. If you hold property or vehicles as stock to sell, their value counts as business stock. Rent you have received and still hold is counted as cash.
