What changed in 2026-27
- Punjab raised token tax to 0.3% of invoice value for 1001 to 2000cc and 0.4% above 2000cc from 1 July 2026.
- Islamabad moved from fixed amounts to 0.25% and 0.35% of invoice value, and doubled the one-time tax on cars up to 1000cc to Rs 20,000.
- Section 231B and 234 withholding rates did not change for 2026-27.
- Motorway tolls went up from 10 July 2026; a car now pays Rs 1,430 on M-2.
Common questions
Which province has the highest token tax?
For mid-size and large cars, Punjab, because it charges 0.3% or 0.4% of invoice value with a minimum. Islamabad is close behind at 0.25% or 0.35%. Sindh, KP and Balochistan charge fixed amounts by engine size, at most Rs 8,000 a year, so an expensive car pays far less there.
What is included in token tax?
The provincial motor vehicle tax and the federal advance income tax under section 234, which the excise office collects together. Punjab also lists a Rs 200 professional tax. Non-filers pay double the section 234 part.
Do I pay tax when I buy a used car?
Yes. The buyer pays the transfer fee, advance tax under section 231B(2), which falls 10% for each year of the car's age, and in Punjab capital value tax on cars above 1300cc that are up to five years old.
