To find fuel cost, divide the distance by your average in km per litre, then multiply by the price per litre. A 760 km return trip in a car that does 14 km/l uses 54.3 litres, which at Rs 389.03 a litre is Rs 21,119. To find your average, divide the kilometres driven between two full tanks by the litres it took to fill up the second time.

How to calculate fuel average
The full-tank method is the most reliable way to check your car's or motorcycle's average.
- Fill the tank until the pump clicks off. Note the odometer, or reset the trip meter.
- Drive normally until the tank is at least half empty.
- Fill up to the brim again at the same pump if you can. Note the litres and the odometer.
- Divide the kilometres driven by the litres of the second fill.
Example: the odometer went from 45,200 to 45,650 km, and the tank took 32 litres.

Repeat it over two or three fills and take the overall figure; one tank can mislead if you spent a day in traffic.

Monthly fuel budget
Multiply your daily distance by the number of days you drive, then work out the fuel as above. Driving 40 km a day for 26 days is 1,040 km a month. At 14 km/l that is 74.3 litres, or Rs 28,899 a month at Rs 389.03, and about Rs 346,800 a year.
Your real average in city traffic is usually lower than the figure you get on a motorway. Air conditioning, tyre pressure, extra weight and hard braking all cut it. Measure it with the fuel average tab rather than relying on the maker's figure.

How do I convert km per litre to litres per 100 km?
Divide 100 by the km per litre figure. A car doing 14 km/l uses 100 / 14 = 7.14 litres per 100 km. To go the other way, divide 100 by the litres per 100 km. The calculator shows both.
