Gold calculation formula in Pakistan
Pakistani jewellers price gold in three steps.
1. Convert the weight to tola
1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti = 11.6638 g.
Weight in tola = tola + masha ÷ 12 + ratti ÷ 96. For grams, divide by 11.6638.
2. Find the rate for your karat
The daily rate is quoted for 24 karat. For lower purity, multiply by karat ÷ 24:
- 22 karat: 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67% of the 24k rate
- 21 karat: 21 ÷ 24 = 87.5%
- 18 karat: 18 ÷ 24 = 75%
3. Multiply, then add making charges
Gold value = weight in tola × karat rate. Making charges (banwai) are added on top, either as rupees per tola or gram, or as a percentage of the gold value.
Worked example: buying a 22 karat set
A set weighs 2 tola 6 masha, 22 karat. The 24k rate is Rs 438,136 per tola (28 September 2026). The jeweller charges 8% making. The 8% is only an illustration; making charges differ by jeweller and design.
- Weight: 2 + 6 ÷ 12 = 2.5 tola (29.160 g)
- 22k rate: 438,136 × 22 ÷ 24 = Rs 401,625 per tola
- Gold value: 2.5 × 401,624.67 = Rs 1,004,062
- Making at 8%: Rs 80,325
- Total: Rs 1,084,387

Selling old gold: the jeweller's deduction
When you sell or exchange jewellery, the jeweller tests its purity and usually deducts something for impurity, solder and loss in melting. This is often called kaat. It may be quoted as a percentage or as so many ratti per tola. Making charges you paid when buying are not returned.
Worked example
You sell 3 tola of 21 karat jewellery. The jeweller deducts 2 ratti per tola.
- 21k rate: 438,136 × 21 ÷ 24 = Rs 383,369 per tola
- Gold value: 3 × 383,369 = Rs 1,150,107
- Deduction: 2 ratti is 2 ÷ 96 of each tola, so 1,150,107 × 2 ÷ 96 = Rs 23,961
- You receive: Rs 1,126,146

Gold price questions
How do I calculate the price of 1 gram of gold?
Divide the tola rate by 11.6638. At Rs 438,136 per tola on 28 September 2026, 24 karat gold was Rs 37,564 per gram and 22 karat was Rs 34,433 per gram. Ten grams of 22 karat was Rs 344,334.
How is the 22 karat rate worked out from the 24 karat rate?
Multiply the 24 karat rate by 22 and divide by 24. That values the gold at 91.67% of pure gold. At Rs 438,136 per tola, 22 karat comes to Rs 401,625 per tola. Some jewellers quote their own 22k rate, which may differ slightly.
What is 1 tola in masha and ratti?
1 tola is 12 masha, and 1 masha is 8 ratti, so 1 tola is 96 ratti. In grams, 1 tola is 11.6638 g, 1 masha is 0.972 g and 1 ratti is 0.1215 g. The calculator accepts all three units together.
Are making charges included in the gold rate?
No. The daily Sarafa rate is for the metal only. Making charges are extra and vary with the jeweller and the design. Ask whether they are per tola, per gram or a percentage, and enter them that way.
Do I pay zakat on gold jewellery?
In the Hanafi school, yes, once your total zakatable wealth reaches nisab and a lunar year has passed. Zakat is 2.5% of the value, using the karat rate without making charges. Our zakat calculator does the full working.
