The CSS age limit is 21 to 30 years, and your age is taken on 31 December of the year before the exam. For CSS 2027 that date is 31 December 2026. Candidates in the rule 6 categories get 2 more years, so the highest limit is 32.

The FPSC notice for CSS 2026 fixed the age on 31 December 2025, and the same rule gives 31 December 2026 for CSS 2027. The age is not taken on the closing date of applications or on the day of the written exam. This is where most people go wrong.
Date of birth range for CSS 2027, 2028 and 2029
A candidate is eligible if the date of birth falls inside these ranges, both dates included.

The relaxation only moves the older end of the range. It does nothing for a candidate who is under 21, because the minimum age is never relaxed.
CSS 2029 is a projection on the current rules. Check that year's notice when it comes out.
Who gets the 2-year CSS relaxation
Rule 6 of the CSS rules allows two more years to these candidates:
- government servants with at least 2 years' continuous service on the cut-off date,
- residents of Gilgit-Baltistan,
- residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir,
- members of the recognised tribes of the tribal areas,
- members of the Scheduled Castes and the Buddhist community,
- persons with a disability who hold a certificate.
Only one relaxation counts. A government servant from Gilgit-Baltistan still stops at 32, not 34. The federal 5-year general relaxation, which applies to FPSC posts filled by ordinary recruitment, is not given for CSS. Service in an autonomous body or on contract is judged by the notice: keep the service certificate ready if you claim the government servant relaxation.
Worked example
Ayesha was born on 20 May 1996 and wants to sit CSS 2027.
- Cut-off date: 31 December 2026.
- Age on that date: 30 years, 7 months and 11 days.
- Limit without relaxation: 30. She is over by 7 months and 11 days.
- She has been a government servant for 3 years. The limit becomes 32.
- She is now eligible, with 1 year, 4 months and 20 days to spare.
A second case: a candidate born on 1 March 2006 is 20 years, 9 months and 30 days on 31 December 2026. He is under 21 and cannot sit CSS 2027, but he can sit CSS 2028.
How the upper limit is read
"Not more than 30 years" is read to the day. On 31 December of the year before the exam you may be 30 years and 0 days old. One more day and you are out. Someone born on 31 December 1996 is exactly 30 on 31 December 2026 and is eligible for CSS 2027. Someone born on 30 December 1996 is over by one day.
Candidates also get only three chances at CSS. Plan the years in which you use them against the date on which you cross 30 (or 32). Many candidates find they have fewer usable attempts than they thought once the age date is applied correctly. Proposals to raise the CSS upper age limit to 35 have been discussed, but the CSS rules still say 21 to 30, so that limit applies to CSS 2027 unless the notice says otherwise. When FPSC publishes the CSS 2027 notice, read its age clause before you apply. This calculator is not affiliated with FPSC.
CSS age questions
What is the age limit for CSS 2027?
21 to 30 years on 31 December 2026. If you were born between 31 December 1996 and 31 December 2005, both dates included, you are within the limit. Candidates in the rule 6 categories can be up to 32, so the older end moves to 31 December 1994.
Is the CSS age counted on the exam date?
No. It is counted on 31 December of the year before the exam. For CSS 2027 that is 31 December 2026, even though the written exam is held in 2027. Your age on the closing date of applications or on the first paper does not matter.
Can I get age relaxation for CSS as a government employee?
Yes, 2 years, if you have at least 2 years' continuous government service. That makes your limit 32. You cannot add another relaxation on top, and the 5-year general relaxation for other federal posts does not apply to CSS.
Has the CSS age limit been raised to 35?
No. Raising it to 35 has been proposed, but the CSS rules have not been changed. The limit stays at 21 to 30, with up to 32 for the rule 6 categories. Read the age clause of the CSS 2027 notice when FPSC publishes it.
How many attempts are allowed in CSS?
Three. Work out when you cross the age limit, then plan your three attempts inside those years. The calculator shows how much time you have left under the limit on the cut-off date.
