GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points for one semester, on a scale of 0 to 4.00. To calculate it, multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add these up, and divide by your total credit hours.
This calculator uses the HEC grading scale, which many Pakistani universities follow. If your university has its own table, pick it from the university list below, because a single mark can change the grade from one university to the next.
What GPA and CGPA mean
GPA (Grade Point Average) covers one semester only. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) covers every semester you have completed so far. Both use the same formula. The only difference is which courses go into it.
Your transcript shows both. Degree eligibility, jobs and admission to MS or MPhil look at the CGPA. To combine semesters, use the CGPA calculator.
Credit hours and quality points
A credit hour roughly means one hour of class a week across the semester. A 3 credit hour course counts three times as much as a 1 credit hour lab. That is why a poor grade in a 4 credit hour course hurts more than the same grade in a 2 credit hour course.
Quality points are grade points multiplied by credit hours. An A (4.00) in a 3 credit hour course earns 12 quality points. A B (3.00) in the same course earns 9. Your GPA is your total quality points divided by your total credit hours:
GPA = sum of (grade point × credit hours) ÷ sum of credit hours

HEC gives each grade a range of grade points, not a single value. For example, A- runs from 3.34 to 3.66 and B from 2.67 to 3.00. The table above uses the top of each range, which is how COMSATS and many other universities apply it. A university that sits at a different point in the range will give slightly different results.
Worked example: five courses, 16 credit hours
A student has these marks in one semester:

GPA = 51.62 ÷ 16 = 3.23.
Note the 4 credit hour course. At 69 marks it earns a B- and pulls the GPA down more than a 3 credit hour B- would. Two more marks in that course (71) would have made it a B (3.00) and lifted the GPA to 3.31.
Three ways to enter your results
- Marks: type the percentage for each course. The calculator looks up the grade in the HEC table.
- Letter grade: pick the grade printed on your result card. Use this if your university grades on a curve.
- Grade points: type the exact points from your transcript. This is the most accurate option, because it skips any table.
If your result card already shows grade points, use them. Tables differ between universities and even between intakes of the same university.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate GPA from marks?
Convert each course's marks into a grade point using your university's table. Multiply that grade point by the course's credit hours to get quality points. Add up all quality points and divide by total credit hours. On the HEC scale, 82 marks in a 3 credit hour course gives A- at 3.66, which is 10.98 quality points.
What is a good GPA in Pakistan?
A GPA of 3.00 or above is usually seen as good, and 3.50 or above as very good. For a bachelor's degree, HEC policy sets a minimum CGPA of 2.00. For MS or MPhil it is 2.50. Scholarships and jobs often set their own cut-offs, so check the notice you are applying to.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA is for one semester. CGPA is for all semesters together. Both divide total quality points by total credit hours. If you scored a GPA of 3.23 on 16 credit hours this semester and had a 3.10 CGPA on 64 credit hours before it, your new CGPA is 3.13, not the average of the two numbers.
Can I convert my GPA into a percentage?
HEC recommends an equivalence table in which each CGPA band maps to a percentage band. For example, 3.00 falls in the B band, which is 71 to 74 percent. Why does my university portal show a different GPA?
Your university may use a different table from HEC. Some start A at 86 instead of 85, some round marks before grading, and some grade on a curve. A repeated course may also replace the older grade. Pick your university's page if we have one, or enter the grade points from your result card.
