IBA Karachi sets a high bar. On its absolute scale, an A (4.00) needs 93 marks, and anything below 60 is an F. Between them sit A- at 87, B+ at 82, B at 77 and so on, each with a fixed grade point. Enter marks or letters and the calculator returns your GPA.
IBA also lets faculty grade on a relative basis instead. If your instructor did that, pick "Letter grade" and enter the letters from your result.
How IBA grading works
The IBA grading plan took effect in Spring 2010. It uses 5 or 6 mark bands with points that step by one third: 4.00, 3.67, 3.33, 3.00 and so on. There is no D grade. The lowest pass is C- (60 to 63) at 1.67.
Semester work carries 60% of a course and the final exam 40%. Faculty may use relative grading in place of the absolute scale, which means the marks bands below may not match your letter. The letter and its points are what count.
Academic standing
- CGPA 2.20 or more: good standing.
- CGPA 2.00 to 2.19: probation.
- CGPA below 2.00: dismissal.

Worked example: an IBA semester
| Course | Credit hours | Marks | Grade | Points | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | 90 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Course 2 | 3 | 80 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| Course 3 | 3 | 70 | C+ | 2.33 | 6.99 |
| Course 4 | 3 | 62 | C- | 1.67 | 5.01 |
| Course 5 | 3 | 95 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Total | 15 | 44.01 |
GPA = 44.01 ÷ 15 = 2.93.
Notice that 80 marks, an A at many universities, is only a B at IBA. And 70 is a C+.
Getting off probation
Say your CGPA is 2.10 after 30 credit hours. To reach 2.20 after a 15-credit semester, you need 2.20 × 45 = 99.00 quality points. You have 63.00, so you need 36.00 from 15 credit hours: a GPA of 2.40.

Questions people ask
How is GPA calculated at IBA Karachi?
Multiply the grade point of each course by its credit hours, add them up and divide by total credit hours. IBA uses 4.00 for A, 3.67 for A-, 3.33 for B+, down to 1.67 for C-. For example, 44.01 quality points over 15 credit hours is a GPA of 2.93.
What is the passing mark at IBA?
On the IBA absolute scale, you need 60% to pass a course. 60 to 63 is C- with 1.67 points. Below 60 is F. That is higher than the 50% pass line at most Pakistani universities.
Does IBA use relative grading?
The grading plan allows faculty to use relative grading instead of the absolute scale. If a course was graded relatively, your marks may not match the bands in the table. Enter your letter grades in the IBA GPA calculator to get the right figure.
What CGPA puts you on probation at IBA?
A CGPA from 2.00 to 2.19 means probation, and below 2.00 means dismissal. 2.20 is the minimum for good standing. Use "Add previous semesters" above to see the semester GPA you need.
How do I convert my IBA CGPA into percentage?
The IBA grading plan gives no official formula. If you need a figure for a form, our CGPA to percentage page gives the HEC estimate. Because IBA's bands are higher than most, mention your CGPA as well.
