Protected and unprotected: why it matters
The biggest thing that changes a household bill is whether you are protected or unprotected. Protected consumers used 200 units or less in each of the last six months. They pay much lower rates and keep the benefit of one previous slab.
For example, a protected home using 150 units pays 100 units at Rs 10.54 and 50 units at Rs 13.01. That is Rs 1,704.50 before adjustments and taxes.
Unprotected consumers get no slab benefit. All units are charged at the rate of the slab the month's total falls in. A home that uses 228 units pays 228 x Rs 33.10, which is Rs 7,546.80 for energy alone. Going one unit over a slab limit can raise the whole bill, so it is worth watching your meter near 200, 300 and 400 units.
Common questions
Why is my bill higher than units times the unit rate?
The unit rate is only one line. A bill also adds the monthly fuel adjustment, the quarterly adjustment, a financing cost surcharge per unit, fixed charges on your sanctioned load, electricity duty and 18% sales tax. Together these can add a third or more to the energy charge. Our calculators show each line separately.
What does it mean to lose protected status?
If you use more than 200 units in any month, you are billed at unprotected rates that month. You also stay unprotected for the next six months, even if your use drops. Our calculators switch to unprotected rates automatically once you enter more than 200 units for a protected home.
Is the tariff the same for LESCO and K-Electric?
Yes, for household consumers. NEPRA sets one uniform consumer tariff for all government distribution companies and K-Electric. What differs is the fuel and quarterly adjustments each month and some local items on the bill. That is why each company has its own calculator page.
How accurate is the estimate?
We tested the calculator against a real LESCO bill for 228 units and it matched to within a rupee. Your bill may still differ if it includes arrears, instalments, meter rent or a local charge. Use your own bill for the exact amount due.
