One unit of sui gas on a home bill is 1 hm3, which is 100 cubic metres. Gas is priced per MMBTU, from Rs 200 on the lowest protected slab to Rs 4,200 above 4 hm3, so the price of 1 hm3 depends on your slab and on the GCV printed on your bill. A non-protected SNGPL home using 1 hm3 at GCV 942 pays Rs 5,802 for that one unit once the fixed charge, meter rent and GST are added. The gas itself, at the slab rates, is Rs 3,377 of it.
SNGPL and SSGC charge the same OGRA schedule, in force since 1 July 2025 (unchanged for 2026-27). The calculator turns your own use and GCV into the price per hm3, per MMBTU and per cubic metre.
What is 1 unit of gas?
Your meter measures volume. The bill charges for heat. Three figures connect them.
- hm3 is hundred cubic metres. The bill shows the gas you used in hm3, and that is what people mean by a unit of gas.
- MMBTU is a million British thermal units, the heat in the gas. Every slab rate is per MMBTU.
- GCV, the gross calorific value, is the heat in each cubic foot of gas that month. It is printed on the bill and changes slightly from month to month.
The bill converts like this: MMBTU = cubic metres ÷ 28.17385 × GCV ÷ 1,000. So 1 hm3 is 3.3435 MMBTU at SNGPL's GCV of 942, and 3.5139 MMBTU at SSGC's 990. The same hm3 carries a little more heat in Karachi, so it costs a little more there. The hm3 to mmbtu converter does this for any amount.
Sui gas price per MMBTU and per hm3 by slab
Domestic rates in force since 1 July 2025 (unchanged for 2026-27). The hm3 prices are the slab rate times the MMBTU in one hm3 at each company's starting GCV, before fixed charges and GST.
| Type | hm3 a month | Rs per MMBTU | Rs per hm3, SNGPL (GCV 942) | Rs per hm3, SSGC (GCV 990) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Protected | Up to 0.25 | 200 | 668.71 | 702.78 |
| Protected | 0.25 to 0.5 | 250 | 835.88 | 878.47 |
| Protected | 0.5 to 0.6 | 300 | 1,003.06 | 1,054.17 |
| Protected | 0.6 to 0.9 | 350 | 1,170.23 | 1,229.86 |
| Non-protected | Up to 0.25 | 500 | 1,671.76 | 1,756.95 |
| Non-protected | 0.25 to 0.6 | 850 | 2,842.00 | 2,986.81 |
| Non-protected | 0.6 to 1 | 1,250 | 4,179.41 | 4,392.37 |
| Non-protected | 1 to 1.5 | 1,450 | 4,848.11 | 5,095.15 |
| Non-protected | 1.5 to 2 | 1,900 | 6,352.70 | 6,676.40 |
| Non-protected | 2 to 3 | 3,300 | 11,033.64 | 11,595.86 |
| Non-protected | 3 to 4 | 3,800 | 12,705.40 | 13,352.81 |
| Non-protected | Above 4 | 4,200 | 14,042.81 | 14,758.37 |
Each home gets the benefit of one previous slab: the gas up to the previous slab's limit is charged at that slab's rate, and only the rest at your own slab's rate. The exception is use above 4 hm3, where all the gas is charged at Rs 4,200.
A home is protected when its average use in the four winter months of November to February was 0.9 hm3 or less. Every other home is non-protected.
Fixed charges, meter rent and GST
On top of the gas, every bill carries:
| Charge | Protected | Non-protected |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed charge per month | Rs 600 | Rs 1,500 up to 1.5 hm3, Rs 3,000 above |
| Meter rent per month | Rs 40 | Rs 40 |
| GST | 18% of gas, fixed charge and meter rent | same |
These are for 30 days. A bill for 31 days scales the fixed charge, meter rent and slab limits by 31/30. A bill paid after the due date adds 10% late payment surcharge.
The fixed charge is why a small user pays so much per unit. A protected home using 0.5 hm3 pays Rs 600 in fixed charge against Rs 395 for the gas itself.
What 1 hm3 costs once everything is added
The whole month's bill divided by the gas used, at each company's starting GCV, for 30 days.
| hm3 | Type | SNGPL bill | SNGPL per hm3 | SSGC bill | SSGC per hm3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.50 | Protected | Rs 1,199 | Rs 2,398 | Rs 1,222 | Rs 2,443 |
| 0.90 | Protected | Rs 1,880 | Rs 2,088 | Rs 1,937 | Rs 2,152 |
| 1 | Non-protected | Rs 5,802 | Rs 5,802 | Rs 6,005 | Rs 6,005 |
| 1.50 | Non-protected | Rs 9,609 | Rs 6,406 | Rs 10,006 | Rs 6,671 |
| 2 | Non-protected | Rs 15,916 | Rs 7,958 | Rs 16,545 | Rs 8,272 |
| 3 | Non-protected | Rs 31,599 | Rs 10,533 | Rs 33,027 | Rs 11,009 |
Worked example: 1 hm3 on SNGPL, non-protected
100 cubic metres ÷ 28.17385 × 942 ÷ 1,000 = 3.3435 MMBTU. One hm3 falls in the 0.6 to 1.0 hm3 slab at Rs 1,250 per MMBTU, and the gas up to 0.6 hm3 gets the previous slab's Rs 850.
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gas charges | 2.006 × 850 + 1.337 × 1250 | Rs 3,376.96 |
| Fixed charge | non-protected, up to 1.5 hm3 | Rs 1,500.00 |
| Meter rent | Rs 40.00 | |
| GST | 18% | Rs 885.05 |
| Bill | Rs 5,802.01 |
Price of that one unit: Rs 5,802.01 per hm3, which is Rs 1,735.30 per MMBTU or Rs 58.02 per cubic metre. The gas alone, with GST, is Rs 3,984.81 per hm3.
Protected SSGC home, 0.5 hm3
At GCV 990, 0.5 hm3 is 1.7569 MMBTU, charged 0.878 × 200 + 0.878 × 250 = Rs 395.31. With the fixed charge, meter rent and GST the bill is Rs 1,221.67, or Rs 2,443.34 per hm3. For a full bill with your own reading days, use the sngpl bill calculator or the ssgc bill calculator.
Where the price per unit jumps
- Protected to non-protected. The protected slabs end at 0.9 hm3. Non-protected rates start at Rs 500 and the fixed charge is Rs 1,500 instead of Rs 600. At 0.9 hm3 a protected SNGPL home pays Rs 1,880; a non-protected home pays Rs 5,309 for the same gas.
- 1.5 hm3. Above it the slab rate rises from Rs 1,450 to Rs 1,900 and the fixed charge doubles to Rs 3,000. On SNGPL, 1.5 hm3 costs Rs 9,609 and 1.6 hm3 costs Rs 12,918.
- 2 and 3 hm3. The rate climbs to Rs 3,300 and then Rs 3,800 per MMBTU, so a winter month with heaters and a geyser can cost several times a summer month.
Gas used in winter decides next year's protected status, so keeping the November to February average at or below 0.9 hm3 matters more than any single month.
Questions people ask
What is the sui gas 1 unit price in Pakistan?
One unit, 1 hm3, costs Rs 669 to Rs 14,043 for the gas alone at SNGPL's GCV of 942, depending on the slab. Those are the slab rates of Rs 200 to Rs 4,200 per MMBTU. With the fixed charge, meter rent and GST, a non-protected home using 1 hm3 pays Rs 5,802 for that unit.
Is 1 unit of gas the same as 1 hm3?
Yes, on a home gas bill a unit means 1 hm3, or 100 cubic metres. The price is set per MMBTU, though, and 1 hm3 holds about 3.34 MMBTU on SNGPL and 3.51 on SSGC, depending on the GCV printed on the bill.
What is the SNGPL per unit price?
SNGPL charges the national schedule: protected homes Rs 200 to Rs 350 per MMBTU, non-protected Rs 500 to Rs 4,200. At GCV 942, a protected home using 0.9 hm3 pays Rs 2,088 per hm3 all in, and a non-protected home using 2 hm3 pays Rs 7,958.
What is the gas unit price in Karachi?
SSGC, which supplies Karachi, Sindh and Balochistan, charges the same slab rates and fixed charges as SNGPL. Its gas usually has a higher GCV, around 990, so each hm3 holds more MMBTU. A non-protected Karachi home using 1 hm3 pays about Rs 6,005 for that unit with fixed charge and GST.
How is the gas bill per unit calculated?
Convert hm3 to MMBTU: cubic metres ÷ 28.17385 × GCV ÷ 1,000. Charge the gas up to the previous slab's limit at that slab's rate and the rest at your slab's rate. Add the fixed charge, Rs 40 meter rent and 18% GST. Divide the bill by your hm3 for the all-in price of one unit.
Has the sui gas price changed in 2026?
No. The federal government kept the domestic prices notified from 1 July 2025 unchanged for 2026-27, so the slab rates above still apply. Gas prices are notified by OGRA on the federal government's advice, and a new notification changes the rates from the date it gives.
Prices per hm3 use each company's starting GCV; your own bill's GCV moves them a little. qaaf is not linked to SNGPL, SSGC or OGRA. Pay the amount printed on your bill.
