FUUAST grades BS courses on a short, half point scale: A from 80 marks (4.0), B+ 75 to 79 (3.5), B 70 to 74 (3.0), C+ 65 to 69 (2.5), C 55 to 64 (2.0) and D 50 to 54 (1.5). Below 50 is F. To get the BS degree you must pass every course and reach a CGPA of 2.50, not the 2.00 most universities ask for.
Enter your marks out of 100 and the credit hours for each course. The calculator finds each grade and your GPA. For CGPA, add your current CGPA and credit hours in the previous semesters section.
FUUAST grading system for BS programmes
Grading criteria for BS programmes except Electrical Engineering, in force from Spring 2012, as set out in the FUUAST examination rules.
| Marks (%) | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| 80 and above | A | 4.00 |
| 75 to 79 | B+ | 3.50 |
| 70 to 74 | B | 3.00 |
| 65 to 69 | C+ | 2.50 |
| 55 to 64 | C | 2.00 |
| 50 to 54 | D | 1.50 |
| Below 50 | F | 0.00 |
Masters (16 years) programmes use the same bands with an A+ for 90 and above (4.0, distinction). BSc Electrical Engineering has its own scale from Autumn 2016: 90 to 100 is 4.0, then each mark lower takes off 0.05, down to 2.00 at 50 marks. Electrical Engineering students can enter the grade points from their result card in Grade points mode.
Worked example: FUUAST semester
| Course | Credit hours | Marks | Grade | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | 80 | A | 12.00 |
| Course 2 | 3 | 79 | B+ | 10.50 |
| Course 3 | 3 | 64 | C | 6.00 |
| Course 4 | 4 | 55 | C | 8.00 |
| Course 5 | 3 | 52 | D | 4.50 |
| Total | 16 | 41.00 |
GPA = 41.00 ÷ 16 = 2.56.
Look at the C band. 64 and 55 marks both earn 2.0, so the nine extra marks in Course 3 added nothing. One more mark in Course 2 (80 instead of 79) would have added 1.50 quality points and lifted the GPA to 2.66.
FUUAST promotion rules and the 2.50 degree CGPA
| Moving from | Courses that must be passed | Minimum CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| 1st to 2nd semester | No condition | No condition |
| 2nd to 3rd semester | 80% of courses | 1.50 |
| 3rd to 4th semester | CGPA rule only | 1.80 |
| 4th to 5th semester | All of semesters 1 and 2, 80% of semesters 3 and 4 | 2.00 |
| 5th to 6th semester | CGPA rule only | 2.20 |
| 6th to 7th semester | All of semesters 1 to 4, 80% of semesters 5 and 6 | 2.20 |
| 7th to 8th semester | CGPA rule only | 2.20 |
| BS degree | All courses | 2.50 |
To find the GPA you need in your last semester, use: (2.50 × total credit hours at the end minus current CGPA × current credit hours) ÷ last semester credit hours.
Example: CGPA 2.40 after 120 credit hours, with 16 credit hours left. (2.50 × 136 minus 2.40 × 120) ÷ 16 = (340.00 minus 288.00) ÷ 16 = 3.25. Masters, MS and MPhil degrees also need 2.50, and a PhD needs 3.00. You need 75% attendance to sit final examinations.
These are the grading and promotion rules printed by the FUUAST examination department for its BS programmes. Students at the Karachi campuses should compare a recent result card with the table above. If the grade points differ, switch to Grade points mode and enter the points from the result card.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my GPA at FUUAST?
Find the grade points for each course's marks from the table, multiply by the course's credit hours, add the results and divide by total credit hours. For example, 79 marks in a 3 credit course is a B+ at 3.5, giving 10.50 quality points. The calculator does each step when you enter your marks.
What are the passing marks at FUUAST?
50 marks, which is a D. At FUUAST a D carries 1.5 grade points, not the 1.0 used on HEC style tables. Below 50 the grade is F with zero points. To be promoted and to get the degree you also have to meet the CGPA and passed course conditions for each semester.
What CGPA is needed for a BS degree at FUUAST?
You must pass all courses and have a CGPA of at least 2.50. The promotion conditions rise along the way: 1.50 to enter the 3rd semester, 1.80 for the 4th, 2.00 for the 5th and 2.20 from the 6th semester on.
Does an A at FUUAST start at 80 or 85?
At 80. On the FUUAST BS table, every mark from 80 to 100 is an A worth 4.0, and there is no A- or A+ for BS courses. Masters programmes add an A+ for 90 and above, but it carries the same 4.0.
Does Electrical Engineering at FUUAST use the same grading?
No. From Autumn 2016 BSc Electrical Engineering gives points for each mark: 90 to 100 is 4.0, 89 is 3.95, and each mark lower takes off 0.05, down to 2.00 at 50. Below 50 is F. Use Grade points mode and type the points from your result card.
