Virtual University uses relative grading, and most letters cover a range of grade points. An A- can be anything from 3.66 to 3.99, and a C from 2.00 to 2.65. So two students with the same letter can earn different points, and your marks alone cannot tell you your exact GPA.
For an exact figure, enter the grade points printed on your VU result for each course, with its credit hours. If you only know the letters, switch to Letter grade and choose the lowest or highest points in each band to see the range your GPA falls in. For CGPA, add your current CGPA and credit hours in the previous semesters section.
VU grading scheme
Letter grades, grade point ranges and equivalent percentages from the VU Student Handbook.
| Grade | Grade points | Equivalent percentage |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.00 | 90 to 100 |
| A | 4.00 | 85 to 89 |
| A- | 3.66 to 3.99 | 80 to 84 |
| B+ | 3.33 to 3.65 | 75 to 79 |
| B | 3.00 to 3.32 | 71 to 74 |
| B- | 2.66 to 2.99 | 68 to 70 |
| C | 2.00 to 2.65 | 61 to 67 |
| D | 1.00 to 1.99 | 50 to 60 |
| F | 0.00 | 0 to 49 |
There is no C+, C- or D+ at VU. A+ and A both carry 4.00. The percentages are a guide only, because grades are set relative to how the class performs in each course.
Worked example: VU semester from result card points
| Course | Credit hours | Grade points on result | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | 3.85 | 11.55 |
| Course 2 | 3 | 3.20 | 9.60 |
| Course 3 | 3 | 2.71 | 8.13 |
| Course 4 | 3 | 2.30 | 6.90 |
| Course 5 | 2 | 1.50 | 3.00 |
| Total | 14 | 39.18 |
GPA = 39.18 ÷ 14 = 2.80.
The same courses as letters are A-, B, B-, C and D. Using the lowest points in each band gives 2.57, and the highest gives 3.06. That spread of half a grade point is why the result card points matter.
VU passing marks: the 20% rule
To pass a VU course you must meet all three conditions:
- At least 20% in formative assessments, which means all graded activities except the final term exam: assignments, quizzes, graded discussions and the midterm.
- At least 20% in the final term exam.
- At least 40% in aggregate, while meeting both conditions above.
A strong midterm cannot carry you past a final term below 20%, and a strong final cannot rescue formative work below 20%. Either way the course is an F, even if your total is above 40%.
Failed courses and repeats in your VU CGPA
VU counts the credit hours of an F in both GPA and CGPA, with 0 points. When you repeat a course, it is counted only once, with the higher grade point.
Example: your CGPA is 2.40 over 60 credit hours, including a 3 credit course failed with 0 points. You repeat it and earn 3.00. The credit hours stay at 60, and the CGPA becomes (2.40 × 60 + 3 × 3.00) ÷ 60 = (144.00 + 9.00) ÷ 60 = 2.55.
A BS degree at VU needs a CGPA of at least 2.00. The CGPA calculator shows how each semester moves your cumulative figure.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my VU GPA?
Multiply the grade points of each course by its credit hours, add the results and divide by the total credit hours you took that semester. Use the grade points printed on your VU result, not just the letter, since letters at VU cover a range of points.
How is VU CGPA calculated?
CGPA is the sum of credit hours × grade points for every course you have taken, divided by the sum of those credit hours. Failed courses count with 0 points until you repeat them, and a repeated course counts once, with its higher grade point.
Why does my VU grade not match the percentage table?
VU uses relative grading. The equivalent percentages in the grading scheme are a guide, but your letter and grade points depend on your performance compared with the class in that course. Two students with the same marks in different courses can get different points.
What are the passing marks at VU?
You need at least 20% in formative assessments, at least 20% in the final term exam, and at least 40% in aggregate. Missing either 20% condition means an F even when the total is above 40%.
What grade points does an A- carry at VU?
Anywhere from 3.66 to 3.99. Similarly B+ is 3.33 to 3.65, B is 3.00 to 3.32, B- is 2.66 to 2.99, C is 2.00 to 2.65 and D is 1.00 to 1.99. A+ and A are fixed at 4.00 and F at 0.
What CGPA do I need for a VU degree?
BS programmes need a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00. The 2.5 year B.Ed. Elementary programme needs 91 credit hours with a CGPA of 2.00.
