Virtual University charges tuition per credit hour, so your fee depends on how many credit hours you register each semester. BS, Associate Degree, Bachelors and B.Ed tuition is Rs 935 per credit hour, Masters and Diploma Rs 1,430, and MS and Ph.D Rs 2,750. On top come a few fixed charges every semester and, in the first semester only, the admission charges.

Pick your programme, choose new admission or continuing student, and enter your credit hours. Add lab credit hours if a course has a lab. Open "Whole degree" for the total cost of the programme, including the convocation fee and the refund of your security.

How the VU semester fee is worked out

A continuing student pays four fixed charges each semester and tuition for the credit hours taken:

Charge BS, ADP, Bachelors, B.Ed MS
Enrollment fee Rs 1,000 Rs 3,000
Exam fee Rs 500 Rs 500
Fee collection charges Rs 100 Rs 100
Societies, clubs and sports Rs 500 Rs 500
Fixed total Rs 2,100 Rs 4,100

Semester fee = fixed total + credit hours × tuition rate + lab credit hours × lab rate.

A new student also pays the admission, registration, security and processing fees once, plus Rs 1,000 for the endowment fund and Rs 1,000 for an entry test where the programme has one.

Worked examples

New BS student, 15 credit hours

  • One-time: admission Rs 3,000, registration Rs 2,500, security Rs 2,000, processing Rs 500, endowment fund Rs 1,000 = Rs 9,000.
  • Each semester: Rs 2,100.
  • Tuition: 15 × Rs 935 = Rs 14,025.
  • First semester fee: Rs 25,125, of which Rs 2,000 is refundable security.

Continuing BS student, 18 credit hours, one CS lab course

Rs 2,100 + 18 × Rs 935 (Rs 16,830) = Rs 18,930. If 3 of those credit hours are a computer science lab course, add 3 × Rs 2,000 = Rs 6,000, making Rs 24,930.

New MS student, 9 credit hours

One-time Rs 21,000 (admission Rs 7,000, registration Rs 2,500, security Rs 10,000, processing Rs 500, endowment Rs 1,000) + Rs 4,100 + 9 × Rs 2,750 (Rs 24,750) = Rs 49,850. In the thesis semester a continuing MS student with 6 credit hours pays Rs 4,100 + Rs 16,500 + Rs 15,000 thesis fee = Rs 35,600.

Whole degree: a BS of 130 credit hours

Take a BS programme of 8 semesters and 130 credit hours with no lab courses:

  • One-time charges: Rs 9,000
  • Fixed charges: 8 × Rs 2,100 = Rs 16,800
  • Tuition: 130 × Rs 935 = Rs 121,550
  • Convocation fee at pass-out: Rs 2,000
  • Total: Rs 149,350, or Rs 147,350 after the Rs 2,000 security comes back. That is about Rs 18,400 a semester.

Check the credit hours in your own scheme of studies, as they differ between programmes. Lab courses in computer science or biological sciences add to the total. To keep track of your grades, use the CGPA calculator.

VU fee questions

What is the VU fee per credit hour?

Rs 935 for BS, Associate Degree, Bachelors and B.Ed. Rs 1,430 for Masters, Diploma and Specialization Certificate. Rs 2,750 for MS and Ph.D. Lab courses add Rs 2,000 per credit hour in computer science and Rs 3,000 in biological sciences (Rs 5,000 for MS).

How do I calculate my VU semester fee?

Multiply your credit hours by the tuition rate, then add the fixed semester charges: Rs 2,100 for BS and similar programmes, Rs 4,100 for MS. For 15 credit hours in BS that is Rs 14,025 + Rs 2,100 = Rs 16,125 for a continuing student.

What is the VU fee for the first semester of BS?

It depends on your credit hours. With 15 credit hours it is Rs 25,125: Rs 9,000 in one-time charges (including Rs 2,000 refundable security and the Rs 1,000 endowment fund), Rs 2,100 in semester charges and Rs 14,025 tuition. Add Rs 1,000 if your programme has an entry test.

Does VU charge the fee per course?

Not for degree programmes. They are charged per credit hour, so a 3 credit hour BS course costs 3 × Rs 935 = Rs 2,805 in tuition. Count the credit hours shown against each course in your course list, not the number of courses, and enter the total in the calculator.

Is the VU security fee refundable?

Yes. The security fee is charged once and refunded when you complete or leave the programme: Rs 2,000 for BS, ADP, Bachelors, B.Ed and Diploma, Rs 5,000 for Masters and Rs 10,000 for MS and Ph.D.

Are there any charges at the end of the degree?

Yes, a convocation fee of Rs 2,000, charged at the time of pass-out for degree programmes. MS and Ph.D students also pay a thesis fee of Rs 15,000 or Rs 25,000, and a research fee in bioinformatics, biotechnology and related fields.
