GIKI gives every course a letter grade, from A (4.00) down to D (1.00) and F (0). There is no A+ at GIKI, so 4.00 is the most any course can add. Your GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the credits attempted.
One rule sets GIKI apart: when you repeat a course, only the latest grade counts in your CGPA, even if it is lower than the first one. Pick each course's grade and credit hours below. For CGPA, add your current CGPA and credit hours in the previous semesters section.
GIKI grading system
Grade points per credit as listed in GIKI's academic setup. Grades I (incomplete) and W (withdrawn) carry no points and are left out of the GPA.
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
GIKI does not fix marks for each letter. Teachers set the weight of quizzes, assignments, mids and finals, and the grade reflects your overall performance in the course. Enter the letter shown on your result.
Worked example: GIKI semester GPA
| Course | Credit hours | Grade | Grade points | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Course 2 | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Course 3 | 4 | B- | 2.67 | 10.68 |
| Course 4 | 3 | C+ | 2.33 | 6.99 |
| Course 5 | 3 | D | 1.00 | 3.00 |
| Total | 16 | 42.66 |
GPA = 42.66 ÷ 16 = 2.67.
This semester is above the 2.00 line, so the student stays in satisfactory standing. The D in Course 5 is still a pass, since D is the minimum acceptable grade at GIKI, but it pulls the average down more than any other course.
Repeating a course: the latest grade counts
At most universities the better grade counts after a repeat. GIKI is different. Every attempt stays on the transcript, but only the latest grade goes into the CGPA, even if it is lower.
Example: your CGPA is 2.80 over 60 credit hours, and one 3 credit course in it was a C (2.00). You repeat it and get a C- (1.67).
- Grade points before: 2.80 × 60 = 168.00
- Take out the old C: 168.00 minus 6.00 = 162.00
- Add the new C-: 162.00 + 5.01 = 167.01
- New CGPA: 167.01 ÷ 60 = 2.78
The credit hours stay at 60 because the course counts once. Here the repeat lowered the CGPA from 2.80 to 2.78, so repeat a passed course only when you expect a better grade. The CGPA calculator shows how a new semester moves your cumulative figure.
Probation and dismissal at GIKI
GIKI checks your semester GPA, not only your CGPA. A semester GPA below 2.00 puts you on probation, and the next semester you may register for only 10 to 13 credit hours. If your semester GPA stays below 2.00 for two consecutive regular semesters, you are dismissed. Summer school is not counted for this.
To graduate, your CGPA must be at least 2.00. The normal load is 15 to 18 credit hours a semester. After the first year the Dean may allow more, up to 21.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my GPA at GIKI?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add the results, and divide by the total credits attempted. An A in a 3 credit course gives 12.00 and a B- in a 4 credit course gives 10.68. Courses graded I or W are left out. The calculator above does the sum once you pick each grade.
Is there an A+ grade at GIKI?
No. GIKI's scale starts at A, worth 4.00, followed by A- at 3.67 and B+ at 3.33. So the highest possible GPA is 4.00, and a single A- in a semester keeps you just below it.
What GPA puts you on probation at GIKI?
A semester GPA below 2.00. On probation you may register for only 10 to 13 credit hours. If your semester GPA is below 2.00 for two regular semesters in a row, you are dismissed. Summer school does not count toward this rule.
Which grade counts when I repeat a course at GIKI?
The latest one, even if it is lower than the earlier grade. Both grades appear on your transcript, but only the newest is used in the CGPA, and the credit hours count once. Plan a repeat only when you are confident of a better result.
What is the passing grade at GIKI?
D, worth 1.00, is the minimum acceptable grade. F means the course has to be repeated. An F adds no grade points, but its credit hours still count as attempted, so it lowers your GPA until you repeat the course.
