NTU grades undergraduate courses on decimal mark bands: 85 to 89.9 is A (4.00), 80 to 84.9 is A- (3.66), 71 to 74.9 is B (3.00), and so on down to D at 50 to 53.9 (1.00). Because each band runs to .9, a mark of 70.9 is still a B- and 84.9 is still an A-.

At NTU a practical (lab) is its own one credit course, marked out of 100. Enter theory and lab as separate rows with their own marks and credit hours. For CGPA, add your current CGPA and credit hours in the previous semesters section.

The table shows whole marks, but NTU's bands run to the first decimal: B is 71 to 74.9, B- is 68 to 70.9, and so on. Enter decimals exactly as on your result. A+ (90 and above) and A carry the same 4.00.

Worked example: NTU semester with a lab

Course Credit hours Marks Grade Quality points
Course 1 theory 3 84.9 A- 10.98
Course 1 lab 1 90 A+ 4.00
Course 2 3 70.9 B- 7.98
Course 3 3 64 C+ 6.99
Course 4 3 53 D 3.00
Total 13 32.95

GPA = 32.95 ÷ 13 = 2.53.

The lab is its own row, and the theory and lab parts must each reach at least D (50) to pass. Two near misses cost this student: 85 in Course 1 theory would be an A and 71 in Course 2 a B. Each would add 1.02 quality points, lifting the GPA to 2.69.

Relative grading, probation and repeats at NTU

The table above is NTU's absolute grading system. When relative grading is applied instead, grades depend on how the class performs, but any mark below 40 out of 100 is still an F. If your result shows letters that do not match the table, switch to Letter grade mode and pick the letters from your result.

NTU expects a CGPA of at least 2.00 throughout your studies. A GPA below 2.0 in the first semester means probation, and below 1.0 means expulsion. A student who still cannot reach a 2.00 CGPA on second probation is expelled.

Repeating a course to improve a pass is limited. Only students on probation may repeat courses graded D or D+, up to six courses (18 credit hours). The new grade replaces the old one in the CGPA. The CGPA calculator shows what a repeat does to your cumulative figure.

Questions people ask

What is the NTU grading criteria?

A+ 90 and above (4.00), A 85 to 89.9 (4.00), A- 80 to 84.9 (3.66), B+ 75 to 79.9 (3.33), B 71 to 74.9 (3.00), B- 68 to 70.9 (2.66), C+ 64 to 67.9 (2.33), C 61 to 63.9 (2.00), C- 58 to 60.9 (1.66), D+ 54 to 57.9 (1.33), D 50 to 53.9 (1.00) and F below 50.

How do I calculate my NTU GPA with labs?

Treat the lab as a separate one credit course with its own marks out of 100. Multiply the grade points of each row by its credit hours, add them, and divide by the total credit hours. A 3 credit theory course and its 1 credit lab therefore count as two rows and 4 credit hours.

What are the passing marks at NTU?

You need at least a D, which is 50 marks, in theory and in practical work separately. A D carries 1.00 grade points. Under relative grading, any mark below 40 out of 100 is an F whatever the class average.

Can I repeat a course to improve my grade at NTU?

Only in a narrow case. Students on probation may repeat courses in which they got D or D+, up to six courses or 18 credit hours. The new grade replaces the old one for CGPA. If you take a different course in place of a failed one, both grades stay on the transcript.

What is the minimum CGPA at NTU?

A CGPA of 2.00 throughout your degree. Falling below it brings probation, and a first semester GPA under 1.0 leads to expulsion. To graduate with honours you need a CGPA of 3.0 or above in every semester and all courses passed at the first attempt.
