To convert grams to tola, divide by 11.6638. So 10 grams is 0.8574 tola, 50 grams is 4.2868 tola, and 100 grams is 8.5735 tola.

Grams in tola, masha and ratti
Jewellers often want the weight as whole tola, then masha, then ratti. One masha is 0.972 g and one ratti is 0.1215 g.
Worked example: 20 grams
- 20 ÷ 11.6638 = 1.7147 tola, so 1 tola and 8.3362 g left over
- 8.3362 ÷ 0.97198 = 8.58 masha, so 8 masha and about 0.5603 g left over
- 0.5603 ÷ 0.1215 = 4.61 ratti
So 20 g is 1 tola, 8 masha and about 4.6 ratti.

Rate per tola and rate per 10 grams
Sarafa associations publish gold rates both per tola and per 10 grams. Since 10 g is 0.8574 tola, the per-10 g rate should be about 85.7% of the per-tola rate. If a quote is far off that, one of the figures is wrong or includes making charges.

10 grams is 0.8574 tola, or 10 masha and about 2.3 ratti. Gold rates quoted per 10 g are therefore about 14% lower than rates quoted per tola. Keep this in mind when two shops quote in different units.
How do I convert grams to tola?
Divide the grams by 11.6638. For example, 50 g ÷ 11.6638 = 4.2868 tola. Using 11.66 gives nearly the same answer for everyday weights. Do not use 10 or 11.5; both are wrong and will misprice gold by a noticeable amount.
How many tola is 100 grams of gold?
100 grams is 8.5735 tola. A 100 g bar is a common imported size, and it is a little lighter than a 10-tola bar, which weighs 116.638 g. So a 100 g bar should cost about 86% of a 10-tola bar of the same purity.

11.6638 grams make 1 tola. That is 180 grains, or 0.375 troy ounce. So 12 grams is slightly more than a tola, at 1.0288 tola, and a gold piece sold as "12 grams" is not the same as one tola.
