A civil servant in Pakistan retires on completing 60 years of age, and the retirement takes effect from the day before the 60th birthday. Why the day before the birthday
Section 13 of the Civil Servants Act 1973 says a civil servant retires on completing the sixtieth year of age. You complete 60 years at the end of the day before your 60th birthday, so that is the last day of service. Government notifications follow this. A Finance Division notification of 26 September 2023 retired an officer born on 17 November 1963 "on attaining the age of superannuation w.e.f. 16th November, 2023".

Someone born on 1 March retires on the last day of February, whether it is the 28th or the 29th. Judges retire at other ages under the Constitution: 62 for a High Court and 65 for the Supreme Court. Pick the age in the calculator, or choose Other age.
Dates to plan around
- LPR: up to 365 days of leave preparatory to retirement end on the retirement date. For retirement on 16 November 2028, a full LPR would start on 18 November 2027, because 2028 is a leap year.
- Applying: Punjab's leave rules ask for the application at least three months before LPR starts. The calculator shows that date. Federal rules have their own timing for the encashment option, so ask your office.
- Increment: under federal orders, if you have served six months after the 1 December increment, that is if you retire between June and November, one more increment is added for pension.
- 25 years: you can apply for voluntary retirement after 25 years of qualifying service. Federal rules then cut the pension by 3% for each year left to 60, up to 20%. See the pension calculator.

Date of birth 17 November 1968, appointed 1 July 1994, counted from 30 September 2026.
- 60th birthday: 17 November 2028. Retirement takes effect from the day before: Thursday 16 November 2028.
- Service left, counting both 30 September 2026 and 16 November 2028: 2 years, 1 month and 18 days, or 779 days.
- Service at retirement from 1 July 1994: 34 years, 4 months and 16 days. Only 30 years count for pension.
- A 365-day LPR would begin on 18 November 2027.

What is the retirement age in Pakistan?
60 years for federal and provincial civil servants, under the Civil Servants Act 1973 and the provincial civil servants acts. High Court judges retire at 62 and Supreme Court judges at 65 under the Constitution. Many autonomous bodies and companies also use 60, but check your own service rules.
Do I retire on my 60th birthday or the day before?
The day before. You complete your sixtieth year at the end of that day. Retirement notifications give that date: an officer born on 17 November 1963 stood retired with effect from 16 November 2023.
How do I calculate my remaining service?
Count from today to your retirement date, counting both days, in years, months and days. The calculator does this and also gives the total days. For a date of birth of 17 November 1968, the service left on 30 September 2026 is 2 years, 1 month and 18 days.
Can I retire before 60?
