The University of the Punjab, for example, lists Lecturer at BS-18 and Assistant Professor at BS-19 in its advertisement for teaching posts closing on 30 November 2026. A university pays its staff under its own statutes, so its allowances and deductions can differ from the federal rates used on this page. Tax grows faster than pay in this scale. Taxable pay passes Rs 1,200,000 a year at stage 2, where the 11% slab starts, and Rs 2,200,000 at stage 18, where the 20% slab starts. For DRA, a government house or a slip with other allowances, use the government salary calculator 2026.

Worked example: BPS-18 at stage 4, posted in Peshawar

Four increments above the minimum, at a big-city station for house rent:

  1. Basic pay: Rs 68,330 + 4 x Rs 5,120 = Rs 88,810
  2. Allowances: ARA-2026 at 7% of basic pay Rs 6,217; house rent Rs 8,715 (45% of the 2008 BPS-18 minimum of Rs 12,910, plus 50%); conveyance Rs 7,500; medical Rs 2,421
  3. Gross pay: Rs 113,663
  4. Taxable pay: the medical allowance is exempt up to 10% of basic pay, leaving Rs 111,242 a month
  5. Income tax: twelve months of that is above Rs 1,200,000, so the year's tax is Rs 6,000 plus 11% of the excess, Rs 20,839, or Rs 1,737 a month
  6. Other deductions: GP Fund Rs 7,960, benevolent fund Rs 960, group insurance Rs 1,090
  7. Take-home pay: Rs 101,916

The fifth increment on 1 December adds Rs 5,120 to basic pay, but only Rs 4,876 to take-home pay once ARA rises and the extra tax comes off. At the minimum the same increment is worth Rs 5,424, because all of it still falls in the 1% slab.

BPS-18 salary in 2025-26 and 2026-27

2025-26 (BPS-2022) 2026-27 (BPS-2026)

Up to 30 June 2026 BPS-18 officers also drew ARA-2022, at 15% of their BPS-2017 pay. From 1 July both older allowances were folded into basic pay, which is why the new minimum is about a fifth higher. An officer at stage 4 moved from Rs 73,920 to Rs 88,810, the same stage in the new scale. To compare your June and July slips line by line, use the salary increase calculator.
