Under the new board grading system an A grade is 86 to 90%, A+ is 91 to 95% and A++ is 96 to 100%. The pass mark is now 40% in each subject, up from 33%. Under the old scheme used for results before the change, A was 70 to 79% and A-1 was 80% and above.

New grading system: grades according to percentage
The ten grades below were approved by the Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) in August 2025 and notified by the Federal Board on 7 October 2025. The last four columns give the lowest marks for each grade on common totals.

A student below 40% in a subject gets U (Ungraded) in that subject and has to appear in it again. IBCC renamed the remarks in December 2025, so older notices may still say "Unsatisfactory".
Which boards and years use the new scheme
IBCC requires every public and private examination board in Pakistan to use the same scheme, including the Federal Board and every provincial, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan board. It is being brought in class by class, starting from the 1st Annual Examination 2026:
- 2026: Class 9 (SSC Part I) and Class 11 (HSSC Part I).
- 2027: Class 10 (SSC Part II, matric) and Class 12 (HSSC Part II, inter).
- 2028: IBCC's target for full adoption.
So the 2026 matric and inter Part II results were still graded A-1 to F. The Federal Board's SSC Part II result of July 2026 used the old bands, with A-1 from 880 out of 1100.

Old grading system (A-1 to F)
Results before the change used seven grades with a 33% pass mark in each subject. Some boards print the top grade as A+ instead of A-1. The remarks below are the ones printed in the Lahore Board result gazette.

Worked examples
Class 9, 2026, six subjects
A student scores 71, 84, 93, 77, 88 and 66 out of 100. The total is 479 out of 600:
- Percentage: 479 ÷ 600 × 100 = 79.83%.
- New scheme: 79.83 is in the 76 to 80 band, so the grade on the total is B+ (Very Good).
- Subject grades: Mathematics 93 is A+, Chemistry 88 is A, Urdu 84 is B++, Physics 77 is B+, English 71 is B and Biology 66 is C+.
- Every subject is above 40%, so there is no U.
The same 79.83% would have been an A under the old scheme, because the old A band ran from 70 to 79%.
Matric, 860 out of 1100
860 ÷ 1100 × 100 = 78.18%. In the 2026 matric (Class 10) exam that is an A on the old scheme. The same marks in the 2027 matric exam give B+ on the new scheme.
A result between two bands
1000 out of 1100 is 90.91%. The notified bands jump from 86 to 90 (A) to 91 to 95 (A+), so 90.91% sits between them. The calculator shows A and flags it: a board that rounds to the nearest whole number would print A+. Check your result card for the grade your board gave.
Same percentage, old and new grade
The new scheme splits the top of the range much more finely. An 83% that was A-1 before is now B++.

Percentage first, grade second
A board works out the percentage from marks, then reads the grade from the table. For one subject divide the marks obtained by the total marks of that paper. For the whole result add all marks first, then divide by the grand total; do not average the subject percentages when the papers have different totals. IBCC's policy moves result cards towards grades only, and universities are expected to rely on grades later on. For now boards still print marks alongside grades, and the grade point average part of the policy has been put on hold. For 2026-27 admissions universities may use either grades or marks. Board grading questions
What percentage is an A grade in Pakistan?
Under the new board scheme an A is 86 to 90%. A+ is 91 to 95% and A++ is 96 to 100%. Under the old scheme, still used for 2026 matric and inter Part II results, A was 70 to 79% and A-1 was 80% and above.
What is the new passing percentage for matric and inter?
40% in each subject under the new scheme, up from 33%. A subject below 40% is marked U (Ungraded) and must be taken again. It applies to Class 9 and 11 from the 2026 annual exams and to Class 10 and 12 from 2027.
Is 80% an A-1 grade?
Under the old scheme, yes: A-1 started at 80%, which is 880 out of 1100. Under the new scheme 80% is B+ (Very Good). You need 81% for B++, 86% for A and 96% for A++.
What grade is 72%?
B (Good) under the new scheme, which covers 71 to 75%. Under the old scheme 72% was an A, as the old A band ran from 70 to 79%.
Do boards still show marks on the result card?
Yes, for now. During the change boards report marks alongside the grades so that students, parents and universities can follow the new scheme. IBCC plans to report grades only once the change is complete.
