Overtime is due for work beyond 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week.

In Pakistan, a worker who works more than 9 hours in a day or 48 hours in a week is owed overtime at twice the ordinary rate of pay. On a wage of Rs 50,000 a month for a 48-hour week, the ordinary hourly rate is Rs 240.38, so each overtime hour pays Rs 480.77 and 20 hours of overtime pay Rs 9,615.

Enter your monthly wage, your normal weekly hours and the overtime you worked. The calculator shows the hourly rate, the overtime rate and the total.

The overtime formula

  1. Ordinary hourly rate = monthly wage x 12 / (52 x normal weekly hours). With a 48-hour week this is the monthly wage / 208.
  2. Overtime rate = 2 x ordinary hourly rate.
  3. Overtime pay = overtime rate x overtime hours.

Worked example

Monthly wage Rs 50,000, normal week 48 hours, 20 hours of overtime in the month.

  • Hourly rate: 50,000 x 12 / (52 x 48) = 600,000 / 2,496 = Rs 240.38
  • Overtime rate: 2 x 240.38 = Rs 480.77
  • Overtime pay: 20 x 480.77 = Rs 9,615
  • Pay for the month: 50,000 + 9,615 = Rs 59,615

If your normal week is shorter, say 45 hours, the hourly rate is higher: 600,000 / 2,340 = Rs 256.41.

What the law says

Factories

The Factories Act 1934, and the provincial factories laws built on it, limit an adult worker to 9 hours a day and 48 hours a week. Work beyond either limit earns pay at twice the ordinary rate (section 47). Sindh's own Factories Act 2015 keeps the same rule in section 68(1). Exemption rules allow longer hours for some work, such as preparatory or urgent repair work, within set weekly limits.

Shops, offices and other establishments

The shops and establishments laws also fix a 48-hour week and pay overtime at twice the ordinary rate. They cap the overtime a worker can be asked to do; in Sindh the Shops and Commercial Establishment Act 2015 allows 150 hours of overtime a year.

What the ordinary rate includes

The ordinary rate is the pay for normal hours: basic wage plus allowances paid in money, but not overtime itself or a bonus. Use that figure in the calculator, not your pay for a month that already had overtime in it.

Overtime on the minimum wage

On the Punjab minimum wage of Rs 40,000, the hourly rate is Rs 192.31 and overtime is Rs 384.62 an hour. On the Islamabad rate of Rs 40,700 it is Rs 195.67 and Rs 391.35. The calculator warns you if the monthly wage you enter is below your province's minimum. See the minimum wage calculator for every province.

Overtime questions

How is overtime calculated in Pakistan?

Work out the ordinary hourly rate as monthly wage x 12 / (52 x weekly hours), then pay twice that for each overtime hour. With a 48-hour week the hourly rate is simply the monthly wage divided by 208. On Rs 52,000 a month, that is Rs 250 an hour and Rs 500 for each overtime hour.

Is overtime paid on basic salary or gross salary?

On the ordinary rate of pay, which covers the wage for normal hours including allowances paid in money, not just basic. Overtime itself and bonuses are left out. Some employers pay on basic only; check your contract and appointment letter, and the law that covers your workplace.

How many hours of overtime are allowed?

Normal hours are 9 a day and 48 a week. Factory exemption rules allow extra hours within set limits for some kinds of work. Shops and establishments laws cap overtime; in Sindh the cap is 150 hours a year. Your employer cannot make overtime unlimited.

Is overtime taxable?

Yes. Overtime is part of salary for income tax and your employer deducts tax on the higher monthly pay. Use the salary tax calculator with your total yearly pay to see the tax.
