1 acre is 160 marla on the revenue scale, because an acre is 8 kanal and each kanal is 20 marla. In sq ft: 43,560 ÷ 272.25 = 160.
On the 225 sq ft marla used in housing societies an acre is 193.6 marla, and on the 250 sq ft marla it is 174.24. The calculator also writes the answer as kanal and marla.

The acre in karam, sarsai and marla
Old land records build the acre from the karam, a measuring length of 5.5 ft:
- 1 square karam (sarsai) = 5.5 × 5.5 = 30.25 sq ft
- 1 marla = 9 sarsai = 272.25 sq ft
- 1 kanal = 20 marla = 180 sarsai
- 1 acre = 8 kanal = 160 marla = 1,440 sarsai = 43,560 sq ft
That is why the revenue marla has its odd size: it is the one that divides the acre exactly. A patwari measuring a field in karam gets marla directly: a field 40 karam by 36 karam is 1,440 square karam, one acre.
Worked example: a quarter acre split into plots
A family owns 2 kanal of land, which is a quarter acre, and wants to know how many 5 marla plots it could make.
- Revenue marla: 0.25 × 160 = 40 marla, the figure in the fard.
- Square feet: 0.25 × 43,560 = 10,890 sq ft.
- Society marla: 10,890 ÷ 225 = 48.4 marla, so up to 9 plots of 5 marla (1,125 sq ft each) on paper.
- On the revenue marla the same land makes 8 plots of 5 marla (1,361.25 sq ft each).
In practice a street and setbacks take part of the land, so the real count is lower. Before dividing, measure the land with the plot area calculator rather than trusting the old record.
