To turn square feet into marla, divide by the marla size. In most housing societies that is 225, so 2,250 sq ft is 10 marla. On revenue land it is 272.25, so 2,250 sq ft is only 8.26 marla.
This matters when a listing gives only square feet, or when a building plan in square feet has to match a plot sold in marla. Pick the right marla size above first.

Worked example: checking a listing
A flat or house is advertised as "1,800 sq ft". How many marla is that?
- Society marla: 1,800 ÷ 225 = 8 marla exactly
- 250 sq ft marla: 1,800 ÷ 250 = 7.2 marla
- Revenue marla: 1,800 ÷ 272.25 = 6.61 marla
If the seller calls it "8 marla", they are using the 225 sq ft marla. On revenue land, the same area would be sold as under 7 marla. Knowing this stops you comparing an 8 marla society plot with an 8 marla fard plot as if they were equal.
Plot area or covered area?
Marla measures land. A listing's square feet may be the covered (built) area instead, which can be larger than the plot on a double-storey house. A 5 marla society plot (1,125 sq ft) often has a covered area well above that. Convert the plot area, not the covered area, when you want the marla size.
To go from marla back to square feet, use marla to square feet. For plots sold in square yards, use marla to gaz.

Divide the square feet by the marla size. Use 225 for most housing societies, 250 where that size applies, and 272.25 for revenue land. For example, 2,250 sq ft ÷ 225 = 10 marla, but 2,250 ÷ 272.25 = 8.26 marla.
How many marla is 1,000 square feet?
1,000 sq ft is 4.44 marla on the 225 sq ft society marla, exactly 4 marla on the 250 sq ft marla, and 3.67 marla on the 272.25 sq ft revenue marla. It is also 111.11 square yards.
How many marla is 1,360 square feet?
On the revenue marla, 1,360 sq ft is 5.00 marla (5 marla is 1,361.25 sq ft exactly). On the 225 sq ft marla the same area is 6.04 marla. This is why a revenue "5 marla" plot feels bigger than a society one.
How many marla is 3,000 square feet?
3,000 sq ft is 13.33 marla on the 225 scale, 12 marla on the 250 scale and 11.02 marla on the 272.25 revenue scale. In kanal that is 0.67 kanal in a society, or 0.55 kanal on the revenue scale.
