Plot sides that make one kanal
A plot's area is its length × width. Some pairs that give exactly 1 kanal:
- 50 ft × 90 ft = 4,500 sq ft, one kanal on the society scale
- 55 ft × 99 ft = 5,445 sq ft, one kanal on the revenue scale
- 50 ft × 100 ft = 5,000 sq ft, one kanal on the 250 sq ft marla
Real plots are often not perfect rectangles. For an odd-shaped plot, measure all four sides and use the plot area calculator. It gives the area in marla and kanal from the side lengths.
Worked example: comparing two 1 kanal offers
Two sellers each offer a "1 kanal" plot for Rs 30,000,000. One is in a society that uses the 225 sq ft marla. The other is agricultural land measured in the fard at 272.25 sq ft.
- Society plot: 20 × 225 = 4,500 sq ft. Price per sq ft: 30,000,000 ÷ 4,500 = Rs 6,667.
- Revenue plot: 20 × 272.25 = 5,445 sq ft. Price per sq ft: 30,000,000 ÷ 5,445 = Rs 5,510.
The revenue plot has 945 sq ft more land, about 21% more. The prices are only an illustration of the arithmetic. Compare by square feet, not by the kanal label. To go the other way, the square feet to marla converter turns a measured area back into marla and kanal.
Plot area is not covered area
A 1 kanal plot of 4,500 sq ft does not give you a 4,500 sq ft house. Building rules set setbacks at the front, back and sides, and a limit on how much of the plot can be covered. The covered area of a double-storey house can be more than the plot area, because it counts both floors. When an advert says "1 kanal house, 5,000 sq ft", ask whether that is the plot or the covered area.
