8 kanal is one acre on the revenue scale, which is 4,840 gaz. On the society marla, 8 kanal is only 4,000 gaz, so an acre is 9.68 society kanal.
Why 1 kanal is 500 gaz in DHA
The Defence Housing Authorities write the definition into their own rules. The DHA Lahore Construction and Development Regulations 2026 define a marla as "25 square yards or 225 square feet" and a kanal as "20 marlas or 500 square yards / 4500 square feet". A standard DHA Lahore 1 kanal plot is 50 ft by 90 ft, which is exactly 4,500 sq ft or 500 gaz.
The DHA Islamabad-Rawalpindi bye-laws use the same 225 sq ft marla and list plot categories in square yards: 125, 250, 500 and 1,000 sq yd. Those are the 5 marla, 10 marla, 1 kanal and 2 kanal plots.
The Punjab Private Housing Schemes and Land Sub-division Rules 2010 set the marla at 225 sq ft in Lahore district and 272 sq ft in other districts of Punjab, and capped a residential plot in a general housing scheme at 1,000 square yards. On the Lahore marla that cap is exactly 2 kanal.

Karachi and the rest of Sindh buy and sell plots by the square yard, so a Karachi owner comparing with a Lahore or Islamabad plot needs gaz in kanal and marla. Common sizes:

Worked example: a 4 kanal farmhouse
A family is offered a 4 kanal farmhouse plot outside Lahore. The seller's fard shows revenue kanal. A second offer, inside a housing scheme, is also called 4 kanal.
- Revenue plot: 4 x 605 = 2,420 gaz (21,780 sq ft, half an acre)
- Scheme plot: 4 x 500 = 2,000 gaz (18,000 sq ft)
- Difference: 2,420 minus 2,000 = 420 gaz, which is 3,780 sq ft
The revenue plot is 21% bigger, so compare the price per gaz, not the price per kanal. Ask which marla the seller means before you sign. For square feet directly, use kanal to square feet.
