For a rectangular plot, multiply the front by the depth. A 25 x 45 ft plot is 1,125 sq ft, which is 5 marla on the 225 sq ft marla. For a plot with four unequal sides, measure one diagonal as well: it splits the plot into two triangles, and their areas add up to the exact area.
Enter the sides and pick the marla size used in your area. Without a diagonal, the calculator gives the rough estimate that averages opposite sides, and tells you it is only an estimate.
How to find the area of an irregular plot
Four sides alone do not fix the area of a plot: the same four sides can make a rectangle or a slanted shape with less area. A diagonal fixes the shape.
Take the example loaded above: front 30 ft, right side 62 ft, back 32 ft, left side 60 ft, and the diagonal from the front left corner to the back right corner 69 ft.
- Triangle 1 (front, right side, diagonal): sides 30, 62 and 69. Half the perimeter s = 80.5. Area = √(80.5 x 50.5 x 18.5 x 11.5) = 930.0 sq ft.
- Triangle 2 (back, left side, diagonal): sides 32, 60 and 69. s = 80.5. Area = √(80.5 x 48.5 x 20.5 x 11.5) = 959.4 sq ft.
- Plot area: 930.0 + 959.4 = 1,889.4 sq ft, which is 209.9 square yards or 8.40 marla of 225 sq ft.
The formula in steps 1 and 2 is Heron's formula: area = √(s(s − a)(s − b)(s − c)), where s is half the sum of the three sides.
The average of opposite sides method
Property dealers and patwaris often estimate an irregular plot by averaging the opposite sides: ((front + back) / 2) x ((left + right) / 2). For the plot above that gives 31 x 61 = 1,891 sq ft, very close, because its corners are nearly square.
The method is never below the true area and can be well above it when the plot is slanted. A plot with sides 40, 60, 40 and 60 ft is 2,400 sq ft if the corners are square. If it leans so that the diagonal is 80 ft instead of 72.1 ft, its true area is 2,323.8 sq ft, but averaging the sides still says 2,400. That is 76 sq ft, a third of a marla, that you would pay for and not get. Measure a diagonal before you pay by the marla.
Marla and kanal in square feet
| Size | 225 sq ft marla | 250 sq ft marla | 272.25 sq ft marla |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 marla | 225 sq ft | 250 sq ft | 272.25 sq ft |
| 3 marla | 675 sq ft | 750 sq ft | 816.75 sq ft |
| 5 marla | 1,125 sq ft | 1,250 sq ft | 1,361.25 sq ft |
| 7 marla | 1,575 sq ft | 1,750 sq ft | 1,905.75 sq ft |
| 10 marla | 2,250 sq ft | 2,500 sq ft | 2,722.50 sq ft |
| 1 kanal (20 marla) | 4,500 sq ft | 5,000 sq ft | 5,445 sq ft |
Most housing societies use the 225 sq ft marla. Revenue records such as the fard use 272.25 sq ft. For other conversions see marla to square feet, square feet to marla and kanal to marla.
Plot area questions
How do I calculate the area of a plot in marla?
Multiply the length by the width in feet to get sq ft, then divide by the marla size: 225 for most housing societies or 272.25 for revenue land. A 30 x 60 ft plot is 1,800 sq ft, which is 8 marla at 225 or 6.61 marla at 272.25.
How do I measure a plot with unequal sides?
Measure all four sides and one diagonal, corner to corner. The diagonal splits the plot into two triangles whose areas you can work out from their sides. Add them for the exact area. Without a diagonal, averaging opposite sides only gives an estimate that can be too high.
What size is a 5 marla plot?
1,125 sq ft on the 225 sq ft marla, usually laid out as 25 x 45 ft. On the 272.25 sq ft revenue marla it is 1,361.25 sq ft, and on the 250 sq ft marla 1,250 sq ft. Ask which marla the seller means.
How many square yards (gaz) is a plot?
Divide the area in sq ft by 9. A 1,125 sq ft plot is 125 square yards. In Karachi and much of Sindh plots are sold in square yards, for example 120 or 240 yards, rather than marla. Our marla to gaz converter does the reverse.
