At IUB most BS programmes have no weighted formula. Merit is the percentage of marks in your last qualifying exam, usually FSc or FA. Weights apply only where a test is involved: BSc Engineering takes 70% FSc and 30% test, engineering technology, DPT, nursing and allied health take 80% and 20%, and architecture takes 60% Intermediate and 40% DAT, IUB's drawing and interview test.
IUB also adds 20 marks for a Hafiz-e-Quran and takes marks off for each year lost since your last exam. Both are in the form.
IUB merit formulas
From IUB's eligibility criteria for undergraduate programmes.
| Programme or route | Formula | Usual totals |
|---|---|---|
| Most BS programmes (marks only) | Intermediate / FSc / FA 100% | 1,100 |
| BSc Engineering | FSc 70% + Entry test (ECAT or IUB test) 30% | 1,100 / 400 |
| Engineering Technology | Academic marks (FSc / DAE) 80% + Entry test 20% | 1,100 / 100 |
| DPT, BSN and allied health | FSc (Pre-Medical) 80% + Entry test 20% | 1,100 / 100 |
| Architecture | Intermediate / DAE / A level 60% + Drawing and interview test (DAT) 40% | 1,100 / 100 |
Gap years and extra marks
IUB's merit determination rules change the marks of your last qualifying exam before any weight is applied.
| Rule | Effect on your marks |
|---|---|
| Each year lost (most programmes) | minus 5, up to 40 in total |
| Each year lost (BSc Engineering) | minus 10 |
| Hafiz-e-Quran | plus 20 |
| NCC or Women Guard | plus 20 |
In-service candidates are exempt from the gap deduction. For BSc Engineering there is no deduction if you passed additional Mathematics in FSc in the current year. The calculator covers the Hafiz marks; with an NCC or Women Guard certificate, add 20 to your FSc marks yourself. If two candidates tie, Intermediate marks decide, then Matric.
Worked examples
BS (marks only), FSc 900 out of 1,100
Merit: 900 ÷ 1,100 × 100 = 81.8182%. As a Hafiz-e-Quran: 920 ÷ 1,100 × 100 = 83.6364%. Passed three years ago: 900 minus 15 = 885, so merit is 80.4545%.
BSc Engineering, FSc 900 out of 1,100, ECAT 240 out of 400
- FSc: 900 ÷ 1,100 × 70 = 57.2727
- ECAT: 240 ÷ 400 × 30 = 18.0000
- Merit: 75.2727%
With one year lost, 10 marks come off FSc: 890 ÷ 1,100 × 70 = 56.6364, so merit is 74.6364%.
DPT or nursing, FSc 880 out of 1,100, test 60 out of 100
880 ÷ 1,100 × 80 = 64.0000, plus 60 ÷ 100 × 20 = 12.0000, gives 76.0000%.
ECAT score needed: BSc Engineering
FSc 900 out of 1,100 gives 57.2727 points before the test. ECAT is out of 400.
| Target aggregate | Entry test (ECAT or IUB test) marks needed |
|---|---|
| 65% | 104 / 400 |
| 70% | 170 / 400 |
| 75% | 237 / 400 |
| 80% | 304 / 400 |
For the IUB test, enter its marks and total in the calculator instead. The ECAT aggregate calculator shows the same ECAT score under UET's formula.
IUB merit questions
How is IUB merit calculated?
For most BS programmes IUB uses the percentage of marks in your last qualifying exam, after adding 20 marks for a Hafiz-e-Quran and taking off marks for years lost. FSc 900 out of 1,100 gives 81.8182%. Engineering, technology, health sciences, nursing and architecture add a test with fixed weights.
How many marks are deducted for a gap year at IUB?
IUB deducts 5 marks for each year lost, up to 40 marks, from the marks of your last qualifying exam. For BSc Engineering it is 10 marks a year. In-service candidates are exempt. Three years lost on FSc 900 cut a BS merit from 81.8182% to 80.4545%.
Does IUB give marks for Hafiz-e-Quran?
Yes. IUB adds 20 marks to the marks obtained in your last qualifying exam, and the same 20 marks for NCC or Women Guard. On FSc 900 out of 1,100, the Hafiz marks lift a BS merit from 81.8182% to 83.6364%.
What is the IUB engineering merit formula?
BSc Engineering programmes use 70% FSc and 30% test, with ECAT or the IUB test. FSc 900 and ECAT 240 out of 400 give 57.2727 + 18.0000 = 75.2727%. For a 75% merit with that FSc, you need 237 out of 400 in ECAT.
How is merit worked out for DPT and nursing at IUB?
DPT, Generic BSN, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, Medical Laboratory Technology and Forensic Science use 80% FSc and 20% test. FSc 880 and test 60 out of 100 give 64.0000 + 12.0000 = 76.0000%. Hafiz marks and gap deductions apply to the FSc marks before the 80% weight.
