UMT gives Matric a 20% share, twice the 10% used by COMSATS and NUST. Intermediate carries 50% and the UMT entrance test 30%. Intermediate 900 and Matric 950 (both out of 1,100) with 65 in the test give 77.6818%.
Enter your marks below and add a target to see the test score you need. Some programmes also hold an interview, which the published split does not weight.
The UMT formula
Merit = (Intermediate ÷ total × 50) + (test ÷ 100 × 30) + (Matric ÷ total × 20)
| Part | Weight | Minimum to be eligible |
|---|---|---|
| Intermediate or A level | 50% | 45% for most programmes, 60% for engineering |
| UMT entrance test | 30% | 50% in the admission test; 33% in the engineering test |
| Matric or O level | 20% | No third division |
Architecture and design applicants sit the admission test and a drawing test, and face an interview. UMT lists the interview as "if required" next to its merit split.
Worked example
Intermediate 900 out of 1,100, UMT test 65 out of 100, Matric 950 out of 1,100.
- Intermediate: 900 ÷ 1,100 × 50 = 40.9091
- Test: 65 ÷ 100 × 30 = 19.5000
- Matric: 950 ÷ 1,100 × 20 = 17.2727
- Merit: 77.6818%
Each test mark is worth 0.3 points. Each Matric mark is worth 0.0182 points, so 55 extra Matric marks add 1 point, a little more than three test marks. If the same student scores exactly 50 in the test, the pass mark for most programmes, merit falls to 73.1818%.
Test score needed for a target merit
Intermediate 900 and Matric 950 give 58.1818 points before the test.
| Target aggregate | UMT entrance test marks needed |
|---|---|
| 65% | 23 / 100 |
| 70% | 40 / 100 |
| 75% | 57 / 100 |
| 80% | 73 / 100 |
Most programmes need at least 50 in the test whatever the target, so a 65% target still means 50 or more.
LLB is separate. UMT asks LLB applicants for at least 50% in the HEC Law Admission Test (LAT). Once you are in, the UMT CGPA calculator follows your semester results.
UMT merit questions
How is UMT merit calculated?
UMT uses 50% Intermediate, 30% entrance test and 20% Matric for undergraduate admission, as listed on its Fall 2026 admissions page. Intermediate 900/1,100, test 65/100 and Matric 950/1,100 give 40.9091 + 19.5000 + 17.2727 = 77.6818%. Each test mark is worth 0.3 points.
What are the passing marks of the UMT entry test?
UMT's admission criteria ask for at least 50% in the admission test for most programmes and at least 33% in the engineering test. The score then counts for 30% of merit, so 50 out of 100 adds 15 points and a full 100 adds 30. Engineering applicants also need 60% in Intermediate.
What test score do I need for UMT?
It depends on your board marks and the closing merit of your programme. With Intermediate 900 and Matric 950, you need 40 for 70% and 57 for 75%. Most programmes also need 50 to pass the test, so in practice that student's merit starts at 73.1818%.
Does the interview count in UMT merit?
UMT shows the interview as "if required" next to the 50/30/20 split and gives it no percentage. Architecture and design applicants face an interview along with a drawing test. The calculator leaves the interview out. If your programme interviews you, treat the result as the academic and test part of your merit.
Why does Matric count 20% at UMT?
That is the split UMT publishes. It means a strong Matric result helps more than at universities that give Matric 10%. With the same Intermediate and test marks, 1,000 instead of 950 in Matric adds 0.9091 points, about the same as three test marks.
