BPS-9 next to BPS-7 and BPS-11

Worked example: stage 16, the first taxed stage

A BPS-9 employee with sixteen increments, posted in Karachi:

  • Basic pay: Rs 20,990 + 16 x Rs 1,310 = Rs 41,950
  • ARA-2026 Rs 2,937, house rent Rs 2,579, conveyance Rs 2,898, medical Rs 1,500
  • Gross pay: Rs 51,864
  • Taxable pay, leaving out the medical allowance: Rs 50,364 a month. Twelve months of it is just over Rs 600,000, so 1% is due on the excess: Rs 44 for the year, Rs 4 a month
  • Deductions: GP Fund Rs 1,700, benevolent fund Rs 960, income tax Rs 4
  • Take-home pay: Rs 49,200

Posted outside the big cities, the same employee gets Rs 1,719 house rent instead of Rs 2,579, stays under the limit and pays no tax at stage 16. Tax there starts one stage later, at Rs 9 a month.
