1 square gaz is 9 sq ft, because a gaz (yard) is 3 feet and 3 × 3 = 9. So a 120 gaz plot is 120 × 9 = 1,080 sq ft, and a 240 gaz plot is 2,160 sq ft.
As a length, 1 gaz is 3 feet (36 inches). Plot sizes in gaz are always areas, so multiply by 9, not by 3. The converter also shows the plot in marla, kanal and square metres.

Worked example: 120 gaz plot
A 120 gaz house plot in Karachi.
- Square feet: 120 × 9 = 1,080 sq ft
- Square metres: 1,080 × 0.09290304 = 100.34 m²
- Marla on the 225 sq ft scale: 1,080 ÷ 225 = 4.8 marla
Sides that give 120 gaz include 30 ft × 36 ft (1,080 sq ft) and 10 gaz × 12 gaz. The second is the same plot measured in yards: 10 × 12 = 120 sq yd. If your plan gives the sides in feet, multiply them and divide by 9 to get gaz.
Gaz as a length and as an area
The word gaz is used two ways.
- Length: 1 gaz = 1 yard = 3 ft = 36 inches = 0.9144 m. Cloth and boundary walls are measured this way.
- Area: 1 square gaz = 9 sq ft = 0.836 m². Plots are measured this way, and people usually drop the word square.
A common mistake is to multiply plot gaz by 3. That gives 360 for a 120 gaz plot, which is a third of the real 1,080 sq ft.
The karam
In revenue measurement the unit of length is the karam, 5.5 ft or 1.833 gaz. One square karam (a sarsai) is 30.25 sq ft, and 9 sarsai make a revenue marla of 272.25 sq ft.
From gaz to marla and back
Once you have square feet, dividing by the marla size gives marla. On the society scale 1 marla is 25 gaz; on the revenue scale it is 30.25 gaz.
