Upwork no longer charges every freelancer a flat 10%. Its help centre says the Freelancer Service Fee "ranges from 0% to 15% per contract" and is fixed once the contract starts, so check the fee on each offer. At 10%, $1,000 billed becomes $900, and Direct to Local Bank in rupees costs $0.99 a withdrawal.
With 1% FBR tax and the interbank rate of Rs 277.12, $1,000 billed at a 10% fee reaches you as about Rs 246,642. The calculator starts with Direct to Local Bank and no conversion margin: enter the gap between Upwork's rate and the interbank rate on your own statement to make it exact.
How the Upwork service fee works now
Upwork moved new contracts from a fixed 10% to a variable fee from May 2025. Its help page gives the range as 0% to 15% per contract, set by factors Upwork does not publish in detail. The fee is shown before you accept, and it does not change during the contract.
The fee changes what you keep far more than tax does:
| Service fee | You keep from $1,000 | In your bank, local bank transfer, 1% tax |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | $1,000.00 | Rs 274,077 |
| 10% | $900.00 | Rs 246,642 |
| 15% | $850.00 | Rs 232,925 |
To keep $100 before withdrawal at a 10% fee, bill $111.11. At 15%, bill $117.65. Connects, which you buy to send proposals, are a separate cost and are not in these figures.
Withdrawing Upwork earnings to Pakistan
| Method | Upwork fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Direct to Local Bank (rupees) | $0.99 | Pakistan covered, $5 to $8,999 a withdrawal, usually within four business days |
| Payoneer | $2 | Payoneer then converts at up to 3% |
| US dollar wire | $50 | Your bank converts and may charge an incoming fee |
Worked example: choosing a method
Zain bills $3,000 in a month at a 10% fee, so $2,700 is available.
- Direct to Local Bank: $2,700 − $0.99 = $2,699.01, which is Rs 747,949.65 at Rs 277.12. Tax at 1% is Rs 7,479.50, leaving Rs 740,470, before any gap between Upwork's rate and the interbank rate.
- US dollar wire: $2,700 − $50 = $2,650, which is Rs 734,368. Tax at 1% leaves Rs 727,024, before the bank's own margin.
The $50 wire only starts to make sense if your bank's rate is much better than Upwork's. Compare the rupees credited on a past withdrawal with that day's interbank rate before you decide.
Payment timing and tax
Hourly earnings are released about ten days after the weekly billing cycle ends. Fixed-price milestones are released five days after the client approves them. Plan withdrawals so you make one or two a month rather than one per milestone.
When the money lands in your account, the bank deducts income tax under section 154A: 1%, or 0.25% if you are registered with PSEB for IT or IT enabled services. It is final tax, subject to conditions, and it is not doubled for non-filers. The freelancer tax calculator covers the tax rules, and the Fiverr fee calculator the other big platform.
