  • Late registration, US$38. Charged if you register after the regular deadline but before the late deadline.
  • Changing your test centre, US$34. This covers the centre only.
  • Changing your test date. College Board does not move a registration to a new date. You cancel and register again. Cancelling costs US$34 by the change deadline, or US$44 after it up to Thursday 11:59 pm Eastern Time before test day. Your registration fee comes back to the original card.

Worked examples

One sitting, filer. US$111 × Rs 277.01 = Rs 30,748. Advance tax at 0.5% = Rs 154. Total about Rs 30,902.

Two sittings and eight colleges. Two registrations with the international fee come to US$222. Sending one sitting's scores to eight colleges means four paid reports at US$15 each. Total US$282, about Rs 78,507 for a filer.

Late registration, non-filer. US$149, about Rs 41,274 plus 1% tax of Rs 413 = Rs 41,687.

Moving to a later date before the change deadline. You pay the US$34 cancel fee and a new US$111 registration, so the card is charged US$256 in all. The US$68 registration fee comes back, leaving about Rs 52,432 spent for a filer.

Paying from Pakistan

College Board takes card payments in US dollars. Your bank converts the charge at its card selling rate on the day it posts, which is usually a little above the State Bank rate used here. Under section 236Y the bank also deducts advance tax: 0.5% for filers on the Active Taxpayers List and 1% for non-filers. It is adjustable against your income tax for the year, and it is not returned if College Board refunds a fee.

Many Pakistani debit cards are blocked for international online payments until you switch them on in your banking app. Do that before the registration deadline, not on the last day.

Other costs for studying abroad

Universities abroad usually want an English test as well. Compare the TOEFL fee (US$230), the Duolingo English Test (US$70) and the IELTS fee. Your school certificates may also need IBCC equivalence for admission at home.
