A Pakistani IBAN has 24 characters: PK, two check digits, the bank's four-letter code and a 16-digit account number. For most banks the 16 digits are simply your account number with zeros added in front. Some banks add a branch code or a fixed prefix, and the calculator applies each bank's rule.

What each part of an IBAN means
Take PK36 SCBL 0000 0011 2345 6702, a sample Standard Chartered IBAN that passes the check:

The State Bank of Pakistan told banks in May 2012 to issue IBANs to all customers by December 2012, and IBANs have been in use for payments since June 2013. You can use an IBAN or an account number for transfers within Pakistan; for money from abroad, the sender's bank usually asks for the IBAN.

How each bank's account number becomes the 16 digits. We checked every rule against real IBANs published next to their account numbers by large charities, and against the banks' own worked examples where they give one.

How the check digits are worked out
This is the ISO 13616 method every bank uses. Take the example loaded above: Meezan Bank, account 0101-0101234567.
- Build the 16-digit part. Meezan's 14 digits get two zeros in front: 0001010101234567.
- Put the bank code first and PK00 at the end: MEZN0001010101234567PK00.
- Turn each letter into two digits, A = 10 up to Z = 35. M = 22, E = 14, Z = 35, N = 23, P = 25, K = 20: 221435230001010101234567252000.
- Divide that number by 97 and keep the remainder: 93.
- Check digits = 98 minus 93 = 05.
The IBAN is PK05 MEZN 0001 0101 0123 4567. To check any IBAN, move the first four characters to the end, turn letters into numbers and divide by 97. A correct IBAN always leaves a remainder of 1.
Always confirm your IBAN in your bank's app, on your statement or with the branch before you give it out. A single wrong digit usually fails the check, but a wrong account number with correct check digits would pass. Money sent to the wrong IBAN can be slow and hard to recover. This site is not linked to any bank, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How do I find my IBAN number?
Look in your bank's mobile app under account details, on your bank statement, or on the cheque book or welcome letter. Banks were required to tell every customer their IBAN when IBANs were introduced in 2012. You can also generate it above from your account number, then match it with what the bank shows.
Is IBAN the same as account number?
No, but it contains it. The IBAN wraps your account number with PK, two check digits and the bank code, and pads it to 16 digits. For a Meezan account 0101-0101234567, the IBAN is PK05 MEZN 0001 0101 0123 4567. Either can be used for local transfers.
Why did my IBAN fail the check?
Most likely a digit was mistyped or two digits swapped, and the check digits no longer match. The checker shows what the check digits should be for the rest of the IBAN. If the rest came from your bank, fix the check digits; if you are not sure, ask the bank.
What is the bank code in an IBAN?
It is the first four letters of the bank's SWIFT code: MEZN for Meezan, HABB for HBL, UNIL for UBL, MUCB for MCB and ABPA for Allied Bank. The table above lists 27 banks.
Can I get a JazzCash or Easypaisa IBAN here?
Not from this calculator. Mobile wallets use your phone number as the account, and their IBANs follow the wallet provider's own format. Find the IBAN in the wallet app. You can still paste it into Check an IBAN to test the check digits.
