Where you meet hectares in Pakistan

Village records in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa write land in kanal and marla, and the fard gives the owner's share that way. Hectares appear in other papers: crop area statistics, the agricultural census, feasibility reports for canals, dams and roads, and reports from international bodies. A farmer reading that a scheme needs 2 hectares has to turn it into kanal to compare it with his own khasra numbers.

The metric units are fixed by law. The Weights and Measures (International System) Act 1967 set the foot at exactly 0.3048 metre, so one square foot is 0.09290304 square metre. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, and every figure on this page follows from that.

Worked example: land needed for a road

A road plan shows that 0.75 hectare of a family's land falls inside the new alignment.

1. Square feet: 0.75 x 107,639.10 = 80,729.33 sq ft
2. Revenue kanal: 80,729.33 / 5,445 = 14.83 kanal
3. In kanal and marla: 14 kanal, then 80,729.33 minus 76,230 leaves 4,499.33 sq ft, which is 16 marla and 143.33 sq ft
4. Acres: 80,729.33 / 43,560 = 1.85 acres

So the family should expect about 14 kanal 16 marla to be affected. Any notice issued to owners will name the khasra numbers; check them and the area against your fard with the patwari.
