Enter the from and to dates on each experience certificate. The calculator counts each job including its first and last day, merges any periods that overlap so no day is counted twice, and gives your total experience in years, months and days. Gaps between jobs are listed with their exact dates.
For a job application, set "Count experience up to" to the closing date of the advert and enter the result date of the qualification the post asks for. Experience outside those dates is left out, the way the Federal Public Service Commission counts it.
Worked example
Three certificates, counted up to 30 September 2026:

- Jobs 1 and 2 overlap from 15 to 31 March 2018. Those 17 days are counted once.
- Merged, jobs 1 and 2 run from 1 July 2016 to 31 August 2021: 5 years and 2 months.
- Gap: 1 September 2021 to 9 January 2022, 131 days (4 months and 9 days).
- Job 3 adds 4 years, 8 months and 21 days.
- Total: 9 years, 10 months and 21 days, or 3,613 days. Added naively, the three certificates would have claimed 3,630 days.
How experience is counted
- Both ends count. A certificate from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020 is 1 full year, not 1 year minus a day.
- Overlaps count once. Two jobs at the same time, such as a morning school and an evening academy, give one period of experience. FPSC's instructions say overlapping experience is not admissible.
- Separate periods are added as years, months and days, turning every 30 days into a month and 12 months into a year. This is how service books and most departments add broken periods. The calculator also shows the exact number of days.
- Gaps are not experience. They are listed so you can explain them in an interview or on the application form.

What counts for government jobs
The FPSC's general instructions to candidates (updated in November 2025) set out the rules most commissions follow:
- Experience must be post-qualification: gained after the result of the required degree is officially announced, not after the last exam.
- It is counted up to the closing date of the advert.
- It must be a regular, full-time paid job. Daily-wage and contingent service and on-the-job training count if relevant.
- Part-time, honorary, self-employed, apprentice and internship periods are not counted.
- Certificates sent after the closing date are not accepted unless the commission asks for them.
So leave out part-time jobs and internships before you calculate. Provincial commissions and private employers can set their own rules; the advert always decides.
PEC and HEC experience
The Pakistan Engineering Council registers a Professional Engineer after 5 years of professional experience following an accredited engineering degree. An engineering graduate who is not yet registered with PEC needs at least 10 years after graduation for the Category II route. PEC asks for an experience sheet on its format plus employer certificates describing the projects.
Use the degree's result date as the qualification date here to see whether you have crossed 5 years. For HEC and university posts that ask for experience after a PhD or MPhil, enter that degree's notification date instead.
Use the exact dates printed on your certificates. If a certificate gives only months, ask the employer for a corrected one with exact dates before you apply. This calculator is a working tool; the recruiting body decides what experience it accepts.
Experience calculator questions
How do I calculate total experience from multiple jobs?
Count each job from its start date to its end date, both days included. Where two jobs overlap, count the shared days once. Add the separate periods in years, months and days, carrying 30 days into a month. The calculator does all of this and shows the gaps between jobs.
Is overlapping experience counted twice?
No. If you held two jobs at the same time, the shared days count once. FPSC's instructions say experience overlapping with another period of post-qualification experience is not admissible, and most employers follow the same rule.
Does experience count from the date of joining or from the degree?
For government posts, only experience after the required qualification counts, and the qualification date is the day its result was officially announced. Enter that date as the qualification date and anything earlier is left out.
Is internship counted as experience?
Not for FPSC posts. Part-time, honorary, self-employed, apprentice and internship periods are not counted. On-the-job training that is relevant to the post can count. Private employers may accept internships, so check the advert.
How many years of experience do I need for PEC Professional Engineer?
Five years of professional experience after an accredited engineering degree for the usual route. Engineering graduates not already registered with PEC need 10 years after graduation. Enter your degree result date as the qualification date to check.
