Decimal kanal is not kanal and marla
The most common slip is reading 1.5 kanal as 1 kanal 5 marla. It is not. The part after the point is a share of a kanal, and a kanal has 20 marla, so 0.5 kanal is 10 marla.
- 1.25 kanal = 1 kanal 5 marla
- 1.5 kanal = 1 kanal 10 marla
- 1.75 kanal = 1 kanal 15 marla
- 2.1 kanal = 2 kanal 2 marla
To go from decimal to kanal and marla, keep the whole number as kanal and multiply the decimal part by 20 to get marla.
Worked example: 37 marla of land
A seller offers a piece of land recorded as 37 marla.
- Kanal: 37 ÷ 20 = 1.85 kanal.
- Kanal and marla: 1 whole kanal, and 0.85 × 20 = 17 marla, so 1 kanal 17 marla.
- Square feet on the revenue marla: 37 × 272.25 = 10,073.25 sq ft.
- Square feet on the society marla: 37 × 225 = 8,325 sq ft.
The label is the same, but the revenue piece is 1,748.25 sq ft bigger. Land outside a housing scheme is normally measured on the revenue marla, so the first figure is the one to price. For a plot inside a society, use marla to square feet on the 225 sq ft setting.
Why a kanal is always 20 marla
The kanal and marla come from the Punjab revenue chain: 1 marla is 9 sarsai, 1 kanal is 20 marla, and 1 acre is 8 kanal. Housing schemes later shrank the marla to 225 sq ft but kept the 20 to 1 ratio. The DHA Lahore Construction and Development Regulations 2026 define a kanal as 20 marla or 4,500 sq ft, and the Punjab Private Housing Schemes and Land Sub-division Rules 2010 also define a kanal as twenty marla.
So a 1 kanal plot in DHA and 1 kanal of farm land both hold 20 marla, but they are different sizes: 4,500 sq ft against 5,445 sq ft. For kanal sizes in square feet see kanal to square feet, and for bigger areas kanal to acre.

20 marla make 1 kanal. This ratio is the same in housing societies and in revenue records. What changes is the size of the marla, so 1 kanal is 4,500 sq ft on the 225 sq ft marla and 5,445 sq ft on the 272.25 sq ft revenue marla.
How many kanal is 30 marla?
30 marla is 1.5 kanal, written 1 kanal 10 marla. On the 225 sq ft society marla that is 6,750 sq ft, and on the revenue marla it is 8,167.5 sq ft.
Is 10 marla half a kanal?
Yes. 10 marla is exactly half a kanal in every system, because a kanal is always 20 marla. A 10 marla plot is 2,250 sq ft in a society using the 225 sq ft marla and 2,722.5 sq ft on the revenue marla.
How do I write 45 marla in kanal?
45 ÷ 20 = 2.25, so 45 marla is 2 kanal 5 marla. Take the whole kanal first (2 kanal is 40 marla), and the 5 marla left over stay as marla.
How many marla are in 1 acre?
