Worked example: a farmhouse plot
A plot on the edge of the city measures 150 ft by 120 ft.
- Area: 150 × 120 = 18,000 sq ft.
- Society kanal: 18,000 ÷ 4,500 = 4 kanal exactly.
- Revenue kanal: 18,000 ÷ 5,445 = 3.31 kanal, which is 3 kanal 6 marla and 31.5 sq ft.

From the leftover square feet to marla
Sizes rarely divide evenly. To write them the way a patwari or a society office would:
- Divide the sq ft by the kanal size and keep the whole number as kanal.
- Take the sq ft left over and divide by the marla size (225 or 272.25). Keep the whole number as marla.
- Whatever is left is loose square feet.
For 10,000 sq ft on the society scale: 2 kanal uses 9,000 sq ft, 1,000 sq ft is left, which is 4 marla (900 sq ft) and 100 sq ft.
