Mehr-e-Fatimi is 500 dirhams of silver. Deobandi dar ul iftas such as Jamia Binori Town put that at 131.25 tola (about 1,531 g), while Dar ul Ifta Ahlesunnat (Barelvi) gives 150 tola. The Hanafi minimum mehr is 10 dirhams, 2.625 tola of silver. Its rupee value moves with the silver rate, so the calculator multiplies the weight by today's rate.

What Mehr-e-Fatimi is, and why the weights differ
Sayyida Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave his wives a mehr of twelve and a half uqiya, which is 500 dirhams (Sahih Muslim). The mehr of Sayyida Fatima (RA) is reported at the same or a similar amount, and in Pakistan a mehr of this size is called Mehr-e-Fatimi.
The schools agree on 500 dirhams but convert the old silver dirham into today's weights differently:
- Deobandi: 500 dirhams = 131.25 tola, the same dirham that gives the zakat nisab of 52.5 tola for 200 dirhams. Some Deobandi elders, such as Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi, took Sayyida Fatima's mehr as 480 dirhams.
- Barelvi: Dar ul Ifta Ahlesunnat (Dawat-e-Islami) states Mehr-e-Fatimi as 150 tola of silver.
- Ahl-e-Hadith: Salafi scholars weigh a dirham at 2.975 g, so 500 dirhams is 1,487.5 g.
- Shia: the Mahr al-Sunnah of 500 dirhams is given as about 1,500 g of pure silver. Setting a larger mehr is allowed, though some jurists dislike it.

There is no upper limit in any school, but the sunnah is a mehr the husband can pay. A mehr below the Hanafi minimum is raised to 10 dirhams in Hanafi fiqh.
Mehr in the nikah nama and in Pakistani law
The nikah nama asks for the amount of mehr and how much is mu'ajjal (prompt, payable on demand) and how much muwajjal (deferred). Under section 10 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, where the nikah nama does not say how the mehr is to be paid, the whole mehr is presumed payable on demand.
Mehr is the wife's right and a debt on the husband. If it is still unpaid when he dies, it is paid from his estate before the heirs' shares are worked out, as the inheritance calculator does with debts. A mehr written as a weight of silver or gold is owed by weight, so its rupee value is taken on the day it is paid; a mehr written in rupees stays at that figure.
Worked example. At a silver rate of Rs 6,578 per tola (28 September 2026), Mehr-e-Fatimi of 131.25 tola is 131.25 x Rs 6,578 = Rs 863,363. The Hanafi minimum of 2.625 tola is 2.625 x Rs 6,578 = Rs 17,267. Use the tola to gram converter if your nikah nama gives the weight in grams.

What is the minimum haq mehr in Islam?
In Hanafi fiqh, followed by Deobandi and Barelvi Muslims, the minimum is 10 dirhams of silver, which is 2.625 tola or about 30.6 g. At Rs 6,578 per tola that is Rs 17,267. The Shafi'i, Hanbali, Ahl-e-Hadith and Shia schools set no minimum.

Shia scholars call it Mahr al-Sunnah: 500 dirhams, given as about 1,500 g of pure silver, the mehr of the Prophet's wives and of Sayyida Fatima (AS). A larger mehr is allowed. Choose the Shia option in the calculator to value it at today's rate.
Is mehr paid by today's silver rate or the rate on the nikah day?
If the nikah nama fixes the mehr as a weight of silver or gold, it is owed by weight and paid at its value on the day of payment. If it was written in rupees, the rupee amount is owed, whatever silver does later.
