Divide the area by the area of one tile, then add wastage. A 14 x 12 ft room is 168 sq ft; one 24 x 24 inch tile covers 4 sq ft, so you need 42 tiles, or 47 tiles with 10% wastage. That is 12 boxes of 4.

A 60 x 60 cm tile is slightly smaller than a 24 x 24 inch tile (3.875 against 4 sq ft), so you need one or two more per 100 sq ft. Check which one the shop means when it says "2 by 2".
Bathroom wall tiles: worked example
A bathroom 8 x 5 ft with walls tiled to 7 ft, a 3 x 7 ft door, and 12 x 24 inch tiles:
- Wall area: perimeter 2 x (8 + 5) = 26 ft, times 7 ft = 182 sq ft.
- Less the door: 182 minus 21 = 161 sq ft.
- One tile: 1 x 2 ft = 2 sq ft, so 80.5 tiles.
- With 10% wastage: 161 x 1.10 / 2 = 88.6, round up to 89 tiles.
- Boxes of 8: 89 / 8 = 11.1, so 12 boxes.
Twelve boxes hold 96 tiles, 192 sq ft. If you price by the box, count whole boxes. If the shop prices by the square metre and sells loose tiles, 89 tiles are 178 sq ft or 16.54 square metres, Rs 33,073 at Rs 2,000 a square metre. Add the floor separately with "Floor" selected.

One square metre is 10.76 sq ft. Boxes of 12 x 24 inch tiles usually hold 8 or 9 pieces, and 24 x 24 inch or 60 x 60 cm boxes usually hold 4. Always read the label: it gives the pieces and the area per box, and the batch or shade code.
How much wastage to add
- 5% for a plain rectangular room laid straight with large tiles.
- 10% for most rooms and bathrooms, the calculator's starting figure.
- 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, rooms with many corners, or small tiles cut around fittings.
Keep a few spare tiles after the job. Shades change between batches, so a broken tile years later is hard to match.

How many tiles are needed for 100 sq ft?
100 tiles of 12 x 12 inch, 50 of 12 x 24 inch, 25 of 24 x 24 inch or 26 of 60 x 60 cm, before wastage. With 10% wastage it is 110, 55, 28 and 29.
How many tiles are in a box?
It depends on the size and the maker. Boxes of 24 x 24 inch or 60 x 60 cm tiles usually hold 4 pieces, and 12 x 24 inch boxes usually 8 or 9. Enter the number from the label and the calculator rounds up to whole boxes.
How do I convert tile price per meter to per sq ft?
Divide by 10.764. Tiles at Rs 2,000 per square metre cost about Rs 186 per sq ft. To go the other way, multiply the sq ft price by 10.764. The calculator accepts the price in either unit or per box.
How do I calculate tiles for a bathroom?
Work out the walls and the floor separately. For walls, multiply the room's perimeter by the tiling height and take off the door and any window. For the floor, multiply length by width and take off the shower tray. Add 10% to each and round up to whole boxes.
