Masha to Gram Converter

1 masha is 0.972 grams. It is one twelfth of a tola (11.6638 g ÷ 12 = 0.97198 g) and it is made of 8 ratti. So 6 masha is 5.832 g, which is half a tola.

A masha is close to a gram but not equal to it. One gram is 1.029 masha, so treating them as the same is off by about 2.9%, which matters at gold prices.

Reading a jeweller's weight in tola, masha and ratti

Jewellers often write weights as tola, masha and ratti, such as "1 tola 4 masha 3 ratti". Convert each part and add:

A bangle weighs 1 tola 4 masha 3 ratti.

1. 1 tola = 11.6638 g
2. 4 masha = 4 × 0.97198 = 3.8879 g
3. 3 ratti = 3 × 0.12150 = 0.3645 g
4. Total: 15.9162 g

Grams to masha

To go from grams to masha, divide by 0.97198 (or multiply by 1.02882).

• 1 g = 1.029 masha
• 5 g = 5.144 masha
• 10 g = 10.288 masha, which is 10 masha and about 2.3 ratti

Gold rates in Pakistan are quoted per tola and per 10 grams. Ten grams is a little more than 10 masha, so the 10 gram rate is about 86% of the tola rate, not 83%.

Checking a jeweller's receipt

Receipts often give the weight as tola and masha only. You can check it against a digital scale.

Worked example

A receipt says 2 tola 3 masha, and the scale at home shows 26.21 g.

1. 2 tola = 2 × 11.6638 = 23.3276 g
2. 3 masha = 3 × 0.97198 = 2.9159 g
3. Expected weight: 26.2435 g

The scale reads 0.03 g less, which is within what a kitchen or pocket scale can show. A gap of a gram or more is worth raising with the jeweller, because at gold prices a gram is a large sum.

Masha, ratti and tola together
