1 ratti is 0.1215 grams when a goldsmith uses it: a 96th of a tola, or an eighth of a masha. So 8 ratti make 1 masha (0.972 g) and 96 ratti make 1 tola.
Gemstone sellers use a heavier gem ratti of 0.18225 g, which is 1.5 goldsmith ratti or about 0.91 carat. Before you pay by the ratti, ask which one is meant. Choose "Gem ratti" in the converter for stones.

One carat is exactly 0.2 g. So a carat is 1.646 goldsmith ratti or 1.097 gem ratti.

Worked example: a 5 ratti stone
A seller offers a 5 ratti yellow sapphire.
- On the gem ratti: 5 × 0.18225 = 0.911 g, which is 0.911 ÷ 0.2 = 4.56 carats
- On the goldsmith ratti: 5 × 0.1215 = 0.6075 g, which is 3.04 carats
The gem ratti stone is 50% heavier. Gem prices are usually per carat, so ask for the weight in carats or grams and check it on the dealer's scale.

To turn grams into goldsmith ratti, divide by 0.1215 (or multiply by 8.23). For gem ratti, divide by 0.18225 (or multiply by 5.49).

A gemstone certificate gives the weight in carats. Divide carats by 0.911 to get gem ratti; a 5.5 carat stone is about 6.04 gem ratti.
Ratti in gold: deductions and small weights
In gold, the ratti is used for small weights and for the jeweller's deduction when you sell old jewellery. A deduction of 2 ratti per tola means 2 ÷ 96 = 2.08% of the gold is not paid for. On 3 tola that is 6 ratti, or 0.729 g.
Worked example
A pair of earrings weighs 5 masha 4 ratti.
- 5 masha = 40 ratti, so the total is 44 ratti
- 44 × 0.1215 = 5.346 g
- In tola: 44 ÷ 96 = 0.458 tola

The ratti comes from a seed weight that was never exact. Goldsmiths fixed it at 1/96 tola, while the gem trade uses a larger ratti of about 182 mg. Both are still in use, so ask which one is meant.
